Day 1: Arrive in Geneva and explore Grindelwald

Welcome to Switzerland! After your arrival in Geneva, we will transfer by bus to the picturesque village of Grindelwald (3,392'). Located in Switzerland’s Bernese Alps, this is a popular outdoor enthusiast’s destination year-round, and it’s easy to see why. If ever there was a postcard-worthy Swiss alpine village, Grindelwald is it. Blanketed in snow and buzzing with skiers in the winter, warm, green and welcoming in the summer, but always dominated by the north face of the Eiger looming in the background, Grindelwald is the perfect entrée to the ultimate Alps adventure. Check into the Hotel Kreutz & Post and enjoy a bit of down time or explore the area before dinner.

Day 2: Admire icefalls and epic peaks on the legendary Eiger trail

Start your trilogy adventure with a train ride to Kleiner Scheidegg, a mountain pass located in the Bernese Oberland region and the lookout point of the Eiger’s impressive north face. From here, we will follow an easy 5-mile trail that leads to Eigergletscher (7,660’) and the legendary Eiger trail. Admire icefalls and epic peaks, following beneath the great north face before making our way back to Grindelwald, where you’ll undoubtedly sleep well after a full day’s adventure.

From there, we’ll continue on our hike to the saddle of Wart, stopping for lunch near the tranquil Bachsee Lake before making our way up to Spitxen Pass with its striking views of the Eiger. We’ll continue down through ancient alpine hamlets to Holewang, whereupon we’ll be picked up by the minibus and driven back to our hotel for a good night’s rest.

After a well-deserved break at the hut, we will continue along the trail, following in James Bond’s footsteps to the summit of Schilthorn, where the 007 movie On Her Majesty‘s Secret Service was filmed. Pop in for a coffee at the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria, with its panoramic views of the “Swiss skyline,” including Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. On the way down we’ll hike along the ridge for a short while, then take the tram back down to Murren, ride the lift down to the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and transfer back to the hotel in Grindelwald.

Upon arrival we’ll check into the Hotel Butterfly and enjoy lunch.

In the afternoon we’ll continue our Trilogy exploration with an easy hike to the peaceful village of Zmutt, where the traditional wooden houses and charming white chapel are steeped in history. After a short train shuttle to Täsch, we'll take a 1¼-hour transfer to the Valais wine region, through Sion (1,980') to the medieval town of Saillon, which is well-loved for its wines, fig trees, festivals, and the legend of Joseph-Samuel Farinet—a real-life “Robin Hood of the Alps." From the village of Saillon, we start our hike on the “stained-glass trail,' which adds an artistic touch to the natural beauty of the region. Then we continue through the vineyards until we reach the Farinet vineyard, the smallest registered vineyard in the world. As we hike the vineyard trails, we'll learn about the region's unique combination of soil types, microclimates and sun exposure. This extraordinary terroir makes for ideal growing conditions for a number of native grapes, including heirloom varieties such as Petite Arvine, Amigne, Humagne and Rèze. After returning to Saillon, we'll visit the Caveau de Saillon winery for a 1-hour tasting in the pretty setting of a typical ancestral home. Our hike today will take us to Bonatti (6,600') and the Bertone (6,560') huts, both ideal places to immerse oneself in the surrounding panorama and to experience Italian alpine hospitality at its best. We’ll make the hike down the old goat trail back to Courmayeur, where our minivan will be waiting to transfer us back to Chamonix.
