Three Countries, One Legendary Alpine Trek
The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is our most popular trek, and one we’ve been perfecting since 1987. With MT Sobek, you can experience this legendary route your way—from classic small-group treks and private departures to an elevated adventure—circling Western Europe’s highest peak or hiking its greatest highlights through France, Italy, and Switzerland. Along the way, rugged mountain trails cross high passes, flower-filled meadows, glacial valleys, and centuries-old Alpine villages, with sweeping views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding peaks unfolding between Chamonix and Courmayeur. At day’s end, welcoming mountain inns, handpicked hotels and lodges, regional cuisine, local wines, and cheeses are part of the experience. With experienced local guides, luggage transfers, and transportation between Geneva and Chamonix included, MT Sobek makes it easy to take on one of the world’s great long-distance hikes.

What Makes MT Sobek’s Mont Blanc Treks Extraordinary
Decades before the Tour du Mont Blanc became one of Europe’s most sought-after multi-day treks, MT Sobek was guiding guests into the mountains that surround it. Our long history in the Alps dates back to our early days as a company, when we offered mountaineering trips around Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and the Dolomites. As more people started looking for ways to experience the Alps without technical climbing, we shifted to hiking—eventually scouting the famous circuit around the Mont Blanc massif and launching our first Tour du Mont Blanc in 1987. Nearly four decades later, the TMB is our most popular trek, but it remains part of an Alps program shaped over generations of walking these valleys, crossing these passes, introducing people to these views and working alongside exceptional local mountain guides.
This extensive history and experience matter on a trail like the TMB. Weather changes often. A long day feels even longer after the third high pass. An inn that looks unremarkable from the road may offer the dinner everyone talks about afterward, or be hosted by a charming couple that leaves an impression. And often the best part of the day in the Alps is a relaxing lunch of bread, cheese, chocolate, and local specialties somewhere high above a storybook valley. Our guests consistently highlight these types of details—the guides, cuisine, accommodations, rhythm, and smooth logistics—as much as the scenery itself. MT Sobek takes care of all the complicated, moving pieces, so you can do what you came to the Alps to do: hike and enjoy.
More Than 50 Years in the Alps
MT Sobek’s connection to the Alps stretches back to our earliest years, when our trips focused on alpine mountaineering. Decades ago, the climbing programs gave rise to our hiking and trekking adventures that are the core of MT Sobek’s European program today.
Hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc Since 1987
We’ve been passionate about the TMB for decades—long before it became world-famous. MT Sobek scouted the circuit and launched its first Tour du Mont Blanc in 1987, when nights were spent in the mountain chalets and refuges of that time. We’ve been refining the experience ever since.
The TMB, Your Way
There is not one “right way” to hike around Mont Blanc. MT Sobek offers a robust circuit for hikers who want a fuller experience, an express version that concentrates more than 60 miles of hiking into eight days, private departures, and a more elevated Chamonix-and-Courmayeur experience combining hand-picked trails along the route with premier lodging. The common thread is Mont Blanc; the duration, mileage, comfort level, and style of travel are yours to choose.
Guides Who People Come Back to Hike With Again
MT Sobek Alps guides know these mountains—the weather, routes, villages, food, history, and countless small details that transform a gorgeous hike into an unforgettable adventure. This is reflected again and again in guest reviews, where MT Sobek’s TMB guides are described as knowledgeable, patient, encouraging, fun, and, in one review, “the true star and MT Sobek difference.”
Three Countries Without the Logistical Headache
The Tour du Mont Blanc crosses back and forth between France, Italy, and Switzerland, which is a huge part of its magic—and part of what makes planning a TMB trek so complicated. We coordinate the hotels, luggage transfers, transportation, route logistics, and movement between valleys and countries.
Fantastic Food Is a Highlight of the Trek
Fresh bread, alpine cheeses, local chocolate, picnic lunches, regional wines, and dinners in mountain villages are woven into the TMB experience. In reviews, MT Sobek guests describe having local chocolate and cheeses every day, along with fresh breads, while others repeatedly praise the meals and restaurants as highlights of the trip.
Mountain Inns, Alpine Villages & A Cozy Bed at Night
Our TMB trips are mountain journeys with hot showers and comfortable beds at the end of each day. We use carefully selected hotels and inns in the small towns and villages along the route. The rooms are wonderfully European—sometimes small, sometimes centuries old, rarely uniform—and that is very much part of the magic of the Alps.
An Alps Program That Goes Far Beyond Mont Blanc
The Tour du Mont Blanc may be our most popular trek, but it doesn’t stop there. MT Sobek’s broader Alps program spans the Haute Route from Chamonix toward Zermatt, the Eiger and Matterhorn, the Dolomites, and other exciting routes in the European mountains.

Tour du Mont Blanc FAQs
The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of Europe’s most famous trekking routes, and availability is limited due to high demand. Hotels and mountain refuges along the world-class trail book up quickly—often months in advance. As a trusted outfitter, MT Sobek secures reservations at the best available accommodations so you can experience this legendary trek without the hassle of planning logistics. We have dates from June to September.
Most hikers complete the circuit in 10-12 days, allowing time to experience the diverse landscapes and cultures of France, Italy, and Switzerland. MT Sobek offers multiple trip options, including a full 12-day classic trek and an 8-day express version for those with limited time.
MT Sobek offers two ways to experience the Tour du Mont Blanc:
Alps Tour du Mont Blanc Classic – 12 Days
The full experience—hike the entire loop through three countries, crossing breathtaking alpine passes, charming villages, and spectacular valleys. Includes a mix of classic inns, comfortable lodges, and rustic mountain refuges.
Alps Tour du Mont Blanc Express – 8 Days
A condensed version of the trek, featuring the six most scenic days on the route, still circumnavigating the Mont Blanc Massif, but with some transfers to maximize the experience in a shorter timeframe. Perfect for those seeking a challenge with limited vacation time.
The prime hiking season runs from mid-June to mid-September. Here’s what to expect:
June: Cooler temps, blooming wildflowers, fewer crowds. Some higher passes may still have snow.
July & August: Warmer weather, longer days, and peak season for hikers. Most popular time to go.
September: Crisp autumn air, fewer people on the trails, and a hint of fall in the foliage.
All MT Sobek Tour du Mont Blanc trips start and end in Geneva, Switzerland where we provide transfer to Chamonix, France. Chamonix is where the trek itself begins. Completing the Tour is defined by circumnavigating the Mont Blanc Massif from any one point. We choose to start our hike in the celebrated town of Chamonix because it embodies the rich spirit of mountaineering and adventuring in the Alps while also offering the well-deserved comforts of excellent accommodation. Chamonix’s neighbor, Les Houches, is the traditional start and end point of the Tour.
Fly into and out of Geneva, Switzerland (GVA)—just 90 minutes from Chamonix.
Expect well-maintained, well-trodden mountain trails, alpine passes, rocky sections, and rolling meadows. The terrain varies daily, with some steep ascents and descents. You’ll hike through forests, valleys, and high mountain landscapes with stunning panoramic views. Depending on recent weather, you may walk through muddy, snowy, and slippery sections of the trail.
This is a Level 4 trek—best suited for experienced hikers comfortable walking 8-12 miles per day with 2,000-4,000 feet of elevation gain. Good cardiovascular fitness is key, and training with back-to-back hiking days before the trip is highly recommended.
Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are highly recommended for hiking Mont Blanc trails.
