How to get to the Grand Canyon and Phantom Ranch
Phantom Ranch is typically accessed one of three ways, by boat via the Colorado River, by riding in on a mule, or by hiking in on one of the iconic corridor trails leading from the North Rim or South Rim of the Grand Canyon to Phantom Ranch.
To hike to Phantom Ranch, you’ll first need to get to Grand Canyon. Depending on how you plan your trip, you’ll need to travel to the North Rim or South Rim first, which will serve as the starting point for your journey to Phantom Ranch.
Flagstaff is the closest airport for South Rim trips, but Phoenix offers more flight options. All transportation is provided from Phoenix or Flagstaff, Arizona on all MT Sobek guided trips. Independent travelers can rent a car or use a shuttle service, and might also consider Page, Arizona, or Las Vegas as additional options. Remember, when entering the South Rim during high periods of visitation, you’ll need to enter the park before lines are long or plan for delays.
The table below provides helpful information on typical travel times to the Grand Canyon from each of these airport gateway cities:
Airport | Drive to South Rim | Drive to North Rim |
Flagstaff (FLG) | 1.5 hours | 4.5–5 hours |
Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) | 3.5–4 hours | 6.5–7 hours |
Las Vegas (LAS) | 4.5 hours | 4.5 hours |
Page (PGA) | 2.5 hours | 2 hours |
What is the best trail for hiking in and out of the Grand Canyon to Phantom Ranch? What are the trails like?
There are three main Grand Canyon corridor trails leading into and out from Phantom Ranch: the South Kaibab trail, the Bright Angel trail, and the North Kaibab trail.
South Kaibab Trail
Many hikers choose the South Kaibab trail to enter Phantom Ranch from the South Rim. This trail offers a shorter, but more steep descent when compared with other options, and offers spectacular views.
Hikers descend 5,135’ from the trailhead to Phantom Ranch over 7.25 miles and most will complete the hike down in around 4-6 hours. It is most popular among Phantom Ranch hikers as the trail to descend from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch, where an early start on fresh legs can help hikers take advantage of the great views before the late day sun reaches the ridge.
Highlights of the route range from the stunning overlook at Ooh-Aah Point to the sweeping views along Cedar Ridge and the towering figure of O’Neill Butte. The steeper incline on this trail, lack of water refill opportunities, and ridgeline sun exposure at higher elevations later in the day make this a less popular option for hiking out from Phantom Ranch. Importantly, the lack of opportunity to refill water on South Kaibab forces hikers to carry more water through the full ascent from Phantom Ranch, where other routes offer more shade and more opportunities to refill water, requiring hikers to carry less water weight on the hike out.
South Kaibab is MT Sobek’s preferred route to descend from the South Rim into the Grand Canyon due to the stunning views it offers along the ridge early in the day while hiking in, and the opportunity to make the full hiking experience a loop, entering the canyon on South Kaibab and exiting via Bright Angel for a more diverse experience of the canyon’s views, trails, geology and history.
When we do exit the canyon via South Kaibab on MT Sobek trips, careful planning and appropriate support is key to ensuring a good experience, particularly as temperatures climb.
Bright Angel Trail
Alternatively, the Bright Angel trail descends 10 miles and 4,314’ in elevation from the South Rim at around 6,860’ to Phantom Ranch at 2,480’. It typically takes hikers between 4-6 hours to hike down to Phantom on the Bright Angel Trail, and around 6-10 hours to make the hike out via Bright Angel.
This trail is popular for hikers both entering and exiting Phantom Ranch via the South Rim, and offers some particularly attractive benefits for hikers ascending to the Rim after their stay at Phantom Ranch, with greater frequency of periodic shade and with opportunities to refill water at Havasupai Gardens (4.5 miles from the South Rim), at Three-Mile Resthouse (3 miles from the South Rim) and again at Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse (1.5 miles from the South Rim).
Highlights of the Bright Angel trail include breathtaking views deep into the inner canyon, ancient rock art, and the beautiful desert oasis at Havasupai Gardens, which was an important cultural site for the Havasupai people, the original inhabitants of the area.
On MT Sobek trips, the Bright Angel Trail is the preferred trail for exiting the canyon on both Rim-to-Rim and South Rim loop hikes, for the access it offers to shady rest stops, water, and the more gradual ascent it offers from Phantom Ranch back to the South Rim, as compared with South Kaibab.
North Kaibab Trail
From May 15 to October 15, hikers have the additional option to enter or exit the canyon from the North Rim, linking the above trails with the North Kaibab trail for an epic Rim-to-Rim hiking experience of the Grand Canyon; a life-list experience for many hiking and trekking enthusiasts.
This trail is much longer than the South Rim trails, at about 14 miles from the North Rim to Phantom Ranch, and descends about 5,700’ from the North Rim, which sits higher in elevation than the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It takes most hikers around 5-7 hours to descend the trail and around 8-12 hours to ascend.
Most hikers on a Rim-to-Rim hike will descend the North Kaibab Trail and ascend the Bright Angel Trail for an optimal experience, which is the preferred route on MT Sobek guided Grand Canyon Phantom Ranch Rim-to-Rim hikes.
Natural water sources along the North Kaibab trail appear periodically, but you must treat this water before drinking it. Water filtration is provided on all MT Sobek trips and it’s critically important to carry enough potable water at all times.
No matter which route you choose, expect a significant physical challenge and extreme conditions when hiking in and out of the Grand Canyon at any time of year. Proper footwear and gear, layered clothing, adequate water and emergency essentials are key!
How Long Should a Visit to Phantom Ranch Be? What are the Advantages of an Overnight Stay vs. a Day Visit?
For fit hikers with limited time or with a wide range of goals for their time at the Grand Canyon beyond time spent at Phantom Ranch, a one-night stay is a great way to experience the depths of the inner canyon and the historic and secluded beauty of the area.
The advantages of an overnight stay as compared to a day visit are many. A single overnight stay at Phantom Ranch is also easier to secure than a two consecutive night stay and spending even one night at Phantom Ranch allows you to check this incredible destination off your life list and to rest and recover a bit between the big hike in and the big hike out.
All MT Sobek trips feature at least one night at Phantom Ranch, and even a single night stay provides many of the best benefits of a visit to bottom of the inner canyon.
You’ll experience the unique geology of the inner canyon, stand beside the massive Colorado River in an oasis of tower cottonwoods, and gain a wildly different perspective of the sheer scale of canyon than anything you can possibly experience without journeying into the heart of the canyon.
You’ll bathe in the dramatic shifting sunlight reflecting off billions of years of layered bands of rock in the evening and morning hours, an experience generally unavailable to even the most fit day hikers, and will have access to all the services and the beautiful setting at Phantom Ranch itself – sleeping in an historic cabin, enjoying dinner and a celebratory drink at the canteen along with a hearty breakfast the next day, or joining a late afternoon or evening ranger talk when available.
Kids and teens can also enjoy a special junior ranger program unique to Phantom Ranch, the Phantom Rattler Junior Ranger program, complete with a special badge, certificate and patch.
Among the advantages of an overnight stay as opposed to a day visit or 2-night stay are access to a much safer, richer and more immersive experience than a day visit can offer, with a smaller commitment of time and financial resources and higher likelihood of success securing your preferred date when compared with securing a two-night stay. But fitness is key to successfully completing the hike in and back out on consecutive days when visiting for just one night, and there are some wonderful advantages and opportunities generally only available to those who commit to a longer stay.
Is One Night Enough? What are the advantages of a two-night Phantom Ranch stay inside the Grand Canyon?
A two-night stay at Phantom Ranch opens a completely new world of opportunity for relaxation and exploration of the inner canyon via the connected network of trails accessible from Phantom Ranch.
With an extra day, you might relax at the canteen, rest and read in the shade, enjoy a drink in good company at the canteen, stroll the trails along Bright Angel Creek or visit Boat Beach and observe rafting groups on the river.
Those looking for more hiking opportunities can discover the Clear Creek trail, the only maintained trail that extends across the Tonto Platform in this remarkable area of the canyon and a popular option on MT Sobek guided tours to Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon. A short distance along this hike brings you to Phantom Overlook, a great place to reflect on your accomplishment.
As you traverse along the base of the famed geological feature, Zoroaster Temple, distant but impressive views of Brahma Temple open up.
The out-and-back nature of this hike offers travelers the option to set their own turnaround point for as compact or extended a hike as you like. For an even more ambitious trek, hikers who are not planning to hike out via the North Kaibab trail can choose to make the 12 mile roundtrip day excursion up North Kaibab to stunning Ribbon Falls and back, conditions and fitness permitting.
It’s important to remember the total mileage and elevation still remaining to hike out of the canyon after your stay at Phantom Ranch, as that significant challenge still lies ahead!
No matter what you choose to do with the additional time at Phantom Ranch, a two-night stay allows for a deeper and more immersive experience of the inner canyon environment, which includes not only the chance to explore further or to relax and recover more, but also the chance to simply spend more time immersed in the unique seclusion, silence and grandeur of a truly wonderful place that is absolutely unique in the world.
How To Book Phantom Ranch Reservations and Accommodations at the Grand Canyon
With only a limited amount of lodging available at Phantom Ranch, securing an overnight stay is famously challenging. Reservations are obtained through an online lottery system that often requires planning up to 15 months in advance. This limited availability and extended advance booking timeline means that very few of the Grand Canyon’s millions of annual visitors enjoy the opportunity to experience even one night at Phantom Ranch. For anyone hoping to secure an overnight stay, understanding the highly competitive booking process is the essential first step.
Grand Canyon National Park Lodges, part of the Xanterra Travel Collection and an official concessionaire for the park, runs the online lottery system. The same group administers reservations for five other Grand Canyon properties on the South Rim. Lodging on the North Rim is managed by a different provider, Aramark Management Services, operating as North Rim Hospitality.
You’ll need to arrange pre- and post-trip accommodations separately from any nights spent at Phantom Ranch, so be sure to plan your lodging and itinerary to match your chosen route and timing.
If you choose instead to book from among the guided tours offered by MT Sobek, which can include a one- or two-night stay at Phantom Ranch, we handle all the details for you–plus transportation, additional meals, and more. MT Sobek date options are typically available from as little as 30 days out from departure up to as far as 14 months in advance.
