A Personal Love to the Dolomites
Hi, I’m Anne Wood, Senior Director of Trip Development and Operations at Mountain Travel Sobek. I’m thrilled to share one of the most breathtaking destinations I’ve ever encountered—the Dolomites. These stunning mountains in northern Italy have enchanted travelers for generations with their dramatic peaks, rich history, and warm hospitality.
To dive deeper into what makes this region so special, I’m excited to share insights from my colleague Travis Wardell, our Europe Program Director. Travis recently returned from hiking in the Dolomites and brings a wealth of personal experience and passion for this awe-inspiring corner of the Alps.
Where Exactly Are the Dolomites?
The Dolomites are located in northeastern Italy and are technically part of the European Alps—though many people don’t realize it. What sets them apart is how they were formed. The range is named after the dolomite limestone that shapes its jagged peaks and lunar-like terrain. This erosion-prone rock creates the iconic sediment fans at the base of cliffs, constantly reshaping the landscape. Every trail turn reveals a new, unforgettable view.
The region spans several provinces, each with its own unique cultural influence. One of the most iconic towns is Cortina d’Ampezzo—known as the “Pearl of the Dolomites.” Venice is the most convenient international gateway, and because navigating the area can be complex, our itineraries include private shuttles and full logistical support to ensure a seamless experience.
What Makes the Dolomites Different from Other Mountain Ranges?
I’ve hiked in many parts of Europe, but nothing compares to the Dolomites. The beauty is absolutely staggering—whether you’re in a lush valley or on a rocky high pass, the views are surreal. Places like Tre Cime give you those epic, jagged peaks alongside the geological traces of their transformation over time.
But what really sets this region apart is its cultural richness. While it’s easy to assume the Dolomites are simply Italian, the truth is far more layered. The Ladin people still maintain their distinct language and traditions, dating back to the ancient Rhaetians. South Tyrol, once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is largely German-speaking. And in Cortina, you’ll feel firmly rooted in Italian charm. As you hike through the valleys, you’ll experience a tapestry of cultures, languages, and cuisines—all in a single day.
What Is the Food Like in the Dolomites?
In my opinion, the Dolomites offer some of the best cuisine in Italy. The food here is hearty and flavorful—just what you need after a day on the trails. You’ll find a delicious fusion of Italian, Germanic, and Alpine traditions. Dishes like canederli (German-style bread dumplings made with speck, cheese, or spinach) are warming and satisfying. Add in locally produced cheeses, herbs, and wines or crisp pilsners, and you’ve got an unforgettable culinary experience.
What Are the Trails Like for Hiking in the Dolomites?
The Dolomites are incredibly hiker-friendly, with options for every skill level. There are peaceful river walks in the valleys and technical via ferrata climbs in the high peaks. Gondolas and lifts help you access high elevations quickly, and the trail network is expansive, well-marked, and expertly maintained.
Most hikes on our trips range between 4,000 and 9,000 feet in elevation. With such a vast range of routes and landscapes, our expert guides make all the difference in curating the best experience for every traveler.
Explore the Dolomites with MT Sobek
We’ve been guiding trips in the Dolomites since 1973, and in 2025, we’re offering three incredible itineraries, each deeply rooted in local relationships and decades of expertise.
- Best of the Dolomites: This 9-day Level 4 trip is our flagship itinerary, exploring three culturally distinct regions and staying in charming, family-run four-star hotels. You’ll hike a variety of trails and experience Ladin, Germanic, and Italian influences all in one trip.
- Dolomites Hiking with Premier Lodging: Perfect for those seeking both adventure and luxury, this Level 3 itinerary includes five-star accommodations and spa experiences. It begins with a warm-up hike and wine tasting in the Prosecco region before heading into the heart of the Dolomites.
- Hut-to-Hut Hiking Adventure: This Level 4 through-hike is designed for adventurous spirits. Most nights are spent in traditional alpine refugios, high in the peaks. You’ll hike point-to-point, sharing cozy meals and stargazing under pristine skies. Accommodations are shared, typically in four-person rooms, and the route is remote—each day is essential.
Each of these experiences offers something special. Personally, I’ve loved every one—whether it’s the cultural immersion of the Best of the Dolomites, the comfort and indulgence of the Premier Lodging trip, or the unforgettable adventure of our Hut-to-Hut journey.
Who Are the Guides on MT Sobek Dolomites Trips?
We work with an incredible team of 8–10 local guides who are deeply connected to the region. Guides like Luca, a certified mountaineering expert and former classical musician, or Chiara, an accomplished mountaineer and climber, bring passion and deep local knowledge to every trip. Loris, another favorite, teaches mountain rescue and brings tremendous energy to his guiding. These aren’t just guides—they’re storytellers, cultural ambassadors, and trusted companions on the trail.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Is the Best Time to See Wildflowers?
Mid-June to early July is peak bloom season, though you’ll see wildflowers throughout the summer.
What’s the Terrain Like?
Expect a mix of scree, rocks, and roots, with some steep ascents and descents. High-ankle hiking boots are a must.
Should I Bring Trekking Poles?
Absolutely. They help reduce joint strain and improve balance. Just make sure to pack them in your checked luggage.
Can You Accommodate Special Diets?
Yes. Vegan and gluten-free diets can be accommodated on our Best of the Dolomites and Premier Lodging trips. On the Hut-to-Hut trip, we do our best, but options may be more limited due to the remote locations.
Do We Hike Directly from the Hotels?
Most hikes begin after a short transfer (5–15 minutes). Many of our routes are designed as loops or point-to-point to avoid repetition and maximize scenery.
How Long Are The Van Rides?
No. Apart from arrival and departure transfers to/from Venice, most drives are under an hour. Our goal is to spend as much time on the trail as possible.
