  • Arrive in Punta Arenas

    Day 1

    Arrive at the airport in Punta Arenas, Chile, and meet your group leader to transfer to the hotel. In the early evening, gather with the group for a briefing on the adventure ahead.

    Accommodation: Hotel Cabo de Hornos-Punta Arenas

    Recently renovated in modern European style, this large hotel offers comfortable, spacious rooms - some with sea views. Modern amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi, cable TV and room service are provided. There is a restaurant on-site, but the flavors of Punta Arenas await just outside your door, as do museums and other attractions.

  • Board the Ventus Australis

    Day 2

    After a relaxed breakfast, explore the historic city's main square and surrounding shops on your own. This may be a good opportunity to obtain local currency at a nearby bank machine. Or simply relax and recover from the long journey to Punta Arenas.

    In the afternoon, meet up with the group and transfer together to the Port of Punta Arenas to board our ship, the 210-passenger Ventus Australis. We'll check in, and then once onboard, we will have a welcome toast and meet the Captain and his crew.The ship will sail to the far south immediately after, through the mythical Strait of Magellan and the Beagle Channel, where we will travel through Patagonia and the fjords of Tierra del Fuego.

  • Pia Glacier - Glaciers Alley

    Day 3

    Sail along the Northwest arm of the Beagle Channel to make an excursion to the viewpoint from where we can see the imposing Pía Glacier. After this unforgettable experience, continue our navigation with the majestic view of the "Glacier Alley."

  • Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay

    Day 4

    Arrive at Cabo de Hornos National Park, where we will disembark, if the weather conditions are suitable, to experience the magic of walking through one of the southernmost points of the world, surrounded by charm and legends. In the afternoon, we will disembark at Wulaia Bay, a historic site which was one of the largest settlements of the native Yámana canoeists. We will reach a viewpoint, walking through the Magellanic forest in which lengas, coigües, canelos and ferns grow, among other species.

  • Aguila Glacier

    Day 5

    Navigate the Brecknock, Ocasión, Cockburn and Magdalena Channels to finally enter the De Agostini bosom, from where we will appreciate the glaciers that descend from the heart of the Darwin Mountain Range, some of them reaching the sea.In the afternoon, we will disembark in Zodiac boats for an easy hike by the coast surrounding the cold Patagonian rainforest until we reach the front of the Águila Glacier.

  • Parry Fjord and Ainsworth Bay

    Day 6

    In the morning, we will sail through the Parry Fjord and the surrounding glaciers. We will disembark in Zodiacs and head to the end of the fjord to appreciate the theater of glaciers, an area where one may see leopard seals. Navigation will continue through the Admiralty Sine, until reaching the vicinity of the Marinelli Glacier in Ainsworth Bay, in the middle of the Darwin Range and within the Alberto De Agostini National Park. We will learn how life resurfaces after ice has been removed. We will hike to discover a beaver dam and the wonderful sub-Antarctic Magellanic forest that surrounds it.

  • Magdalena Island - Punta Arenas - Torres del Paine National Park

    Day 7

    Disembark at Magdalena Island first thing in the morning, weather conditions permitted. On the island we will be able to see a vast colony of Magellanic penguins. After this excursion, we will return to Punta Arenas.

    Travel across the Patagonian plains to the quiet fishing town of Puerto Natales on the shores of Seno Ultima Esperanza (Last Hope Sound). Stretch your legs and have lunch before continuing on to Torres del Paine National Park and glimpsing your first spectacular views of the Paine Massif (weather permitting). After settling in, observe the ever-changing massif from your hotel window.

  • Get a Close-up View of the Grey Glacier

    Day 8

    Today we'll explore the western side of the park on a trail that follows the Pingo River. We'll look for the rare Andean Deer, and take a boat to get up close to the impressive Grey Glacier with its fantastic blue ice-spires in all kinds of different shapes.

  • Torres del Paine National Park

    Day 9

    After breakfast, head to Laguna Verde, where our scenic hike begins. The hike along the western shore of the lagoon leads to a native forest, with the Paine Massif in our view. Gradually the many different colors of the Paine River, Lake Toro and the Serrano River become more visible. We will have the opportunity to see a great variety of birds and vegetation. Continue to the Weber Bridge, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to our hotel.

  • Torres del Paine National Park

    Day 10

    Today will be an easy hike starting near Lake Sarmiento. Referred to as the Flora and Fauna Route, thanks to the abundant vegetation and flowers that can be seen in spring, this hike also offers the chance to see a diverse range of birds such as condors, eagles, coscoroba swans, upland geese, Patagonian sierra finches, rheas and lots of guanacos. Halfway along the trek there is a stop-off at an old cave, once home to Patagonian native inhabitants, and where it is still possible to observe cave paintings.

    Our 2-hour hike ends in Laguna Amarga from where our driver will take us to Laguna Azul. Here, we will be able to enjoy a picnic lunch with a great view of the Torres del Paine

  • Torres del Paine National Park

    Day 11

    Your Torres del Paine hiking adventure continues. Set out on an adventure that might include a short walk to see the Salto Grande waterfall, beautifully located in front of the Horns (Los Cuernos) of Paine; and a hike on a nature trail to watch llama-like guanacos and view cave paintings drawn by the original inhabitants.

    Day 12

    Take advantage of your final day in the park with another spectacular hike. National Geographic named Torres del Paine one of the most beautiful places in the world, and by day three you'll have gotten to enjoy some of the best scenery in the park. There will be the option to enjoy an 8-10 hour strenuous hike to the base of Las Torres, the famous towers of Paine, or a more leisurely stroll near the Laguna Azul.

Andre Labarca

André fell in love with Patagonia at first sight and has made it his home for the last 10 years. He has participated in more than ten mountain expeditions in the region, accomplishing many first ascents, including the summits of the North and South Towers of the Torres del Paine. André has a great interest in the development of sustainable tourism and is always looking for other regions to explore within Patagonia. André's love for nature and respect for the mountains is infectious to all who travel with him.

Rodrigo Bahamondez

"Ro" was born in the Last Hope Province of Chile and grew up in Patagonia, where he developed a deep love for the outdoors. He has guided in Patagonia and Canada for more than 15 years, and is an accomplished hiker, kayaker, mountaineer, and photographer-with a keen eye for capturing the natural beauty of Patagonia. He is a certified Mountain guide and kayak instructor and has completed Wilderness Emergency Responder & Medical; (WFR NOLS-EASPA). Ro speaks English, Spanish, and conversational French.

FAQ

Are there hair dryers at the hotels and on the cruise?

Yes, you will be provided with a hair dryer.

Will we set foot on Cape Horn?

The captain will do all in his power to let your dream come true, but the weather conditions may prevent safe landing.

Will we have internet throughout the trip?

You will have Wi-Fi in the hotels and the estancia, but not on trails or on board the cruise.

What will I have to carry in my daypack?

On a typical day out you will have to carry your own layers, camera, sunblock, glasses, water and a packed lunch.

What will we do aboard the cruise ship?

There are several activities planned for the trip, but weather may prevent scheduled landings. There will be inspirational movies and lectures throughout the trip, and amazing scenery to watch!

Are penguins seen throughout the season?

Penguins are normally seen from early October through early April before they migrate to the north.
