This area of the range is home to the Szekely, a Hungarian subgroup who maintain a distinct culture and Hungarian dialect. Reaching Lacul Rosu (Red Lake), named for the reddish soils flowing from richly forested slopes into its waters, drop off your luggage before heading out on an exhilarating afternoon hike to explore one of the limestone outcrops overlooking the jaw-dropping 1,000-foot cliffs of one of Romania’s most spectacular natural wonders, Bicaz Gorge.

FAQs
Who will meet me at the airport?
You will meet up with your guide and group at the designated hotel in Bucharest on Day 1 of the itinerary for a brief orientation before transferring to Bucovina together.
Can I wear trail shoes/cross training shoes on the hikes?
Due to rocky and uneven terrain, we recommend hiking boots with ankle support for this trip. However, if you prefer to wear trail/hiking shoes, you are welcome to do so.
Will I experience local culture on this trip?
Yes! Part of the adventure on "the road that unites" is traveling through the ethnographic regions of Romania. You will encounter Hutsul, Szekely, Saxon, and Roma communities, hear their stories from your guide, and see the architectural influences and traditional crafts as you travel through villages.
Can you accommodate my diet?
Romania is known for flavorful and hearty cuisine, made with locally sourced ingredients. Vegan and vegetarian dishes are part of the culture, but gluten-free can be more challenging in small villages. Please discuss any dietary requests before you book.
What is the minimum age for this trip?
The standard minimum age for this trip is 18 but check out our private trip options for families and groups with younger guests.
