FAQs
Trip Overview
What makes MT Sobek's Alps Tour du Mont Blanc hiking trip unique?
MT Sobek has been leading hiking adventures in the Alps since 1970, refining its classic, best-selling Tour du Mont Blanc over decades to deliver a complete circumnavigation of the Mont Blanc Massif. The route connects France, Italy, and Switzerland via historic alpine trails, high mountain passes, and balcony paths with glacier views. Exceptional guiding is paired with thoughtful pacing, luggage support, and hotel accommodations in mountain towns and villages, allowing you to focus on hiking while we manage logistics. Our long-standing relationships in the Alps and carefully vetted hotels are key to your Tour du Mont Blanc experience.
When is the best time to experience the Alps and hike the Tour du Mont Blanc?
June through September is the best time to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc. Early season often brings lingering snow at higher passes and fewer hikers, while midsummer offers longer days and warmer temperatures, and September tends to be cooler and quieter with changing light. Weather can vary at any time, which is why the itinerary is designed specifically for these typically ideal months. The best time for wildflowers varies by year, elevation, temperature, and location, but they are a common sight on Mont Blanc trips. Early summer is typically the peak season for wildflowers.
What is the group size for this trip?
The typical group size for this trip is between 5 and 16 guests, creating an experience that feels personal, relaxed, and thoughtfully paced. Small group travel allows us to share moments that make the journey truly memorable.
What is the minimum age for this trip?
The standard minimum age for this trip is 18. This itinerary is designed with adult travelers in mind, based on daily activity levels, accommodations, and overall group experience. Families or groups with children as young as 16 please check out our private departures .
What makes this a Level 4 trip?
This is a Level 4 trip due to consecutive hiking days of 6–7 hours, daily distances of roughly 8–12 miles, and daily elevation gain and loss of up to 4,200 feet. Trails can be rocky, steep, and muddy. The weather can change rapidly, adding to the overall challenge of this trip.
Will the itinerary change?
We plan the itinerary carefully, but adjustments may be needed due to weather, trail conditions, orรขโฌยฏother factors. MT Sobek and our guides make thoughtful decisions when needed in real time to keep the experience safe and enjoyable, and any significant changes will be communicated asรขโฌยฏearly and asรขโฌยฏclearly as possible.
Arriving and Departing
Where does the trip start and end?
The trip starts and ends in Geneva, Switzerland, with hotel stays and hiking starting and ending in Chamonix. Group transfers between Geneva and Chamonix are included.
What airport should I fly into and out of for the Tour du Mont Blanc?
Fly into and out of Geneva International Airport (GVA) for the Tour du Mont Blanc.
When should I book my flights?
Once your reservation with MT Sobek is finalized, we'll notify you of your trip's status. After your departure is confirmed to operate, flights and travel arrangements may be purchased. While we can often confirm departures in advance, some decisions may be finalized closer to final payment.
When should I plan to arrive and depart?
Once your booking is finalized with MT Sobek and your trip has been confirmed to operate, flights may be purchased. If you are unsure of the status of your trip, be sure to check with your Adventure Coordinator prior to booking non-refundable flights.
Arrive in Geneva by 1:00 pm on Day 1 to join the scheduled group transfer. We strongly recommend arriving at least one day early to allow for international travel delays and to settle in before hiking begins.
Depart from Geneva any time after 12:00 pm on Day 12. A group transfer departs from Chamonix that morning. Exact timing is confirmed in your Final Details.
Who will I meet on Day 1, and where?
An MT Sobek representative will meet you in the Geneva airport arrivals hall for the group transfer to Chamonix. That evening, you'll meet your guide and fellow travelers during orientation and a welcome dinner. Specific information is included in your pre-departure Final Details.
What hotels do you recommend if I arrive early or stay late?
If you want to join the group in Chamonix, please book any additional nights at the group hotel directly with the property and, on arrival, let them know that you are traveling with MT Sobek. Room assignments for the tour are finalized closer to departure, so while your guides make every effort to keep you in the same room you booked on your own, it may not always be possible to avoid a change to the MT Sobek-booked room on the first night.
Do I need a passport or visa for this trip?
A valid passport is required to enter Switzerland, France, and Italy. Most countries require that passports be valid for at least six months beyond the end of your trip and contain at least one blank page for entry stamps. US citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. Non-US citizens should consult their local embassy or consulate to confirm current entry requirements.
Transportation and Transfer Expectations
Are airport transfers included?
Yes. A scheduled group transfer is included from Geneva Airport to Chamonix on Day 1 and from Chamonix back to Geneva Airport on Day 12.
Can MT Sobek help arrange a private transfer?
Transfers outside the provided group transfers are not included and must be arranged on your own. Guests typically select from among these three providers for private transfer services: Chamexpress , Mountain Drop Offs , and Alpybus .
How much time will we spend in vehicles during the trip?
Most days are focused on hiking rather than driving, with occasional short transfers between trailheads and towns. Daily transfer times are included in the Detailed Trip Itinerary.
Are there any especially long travel days?
No. The transfers to/from Geneva take 1.5 hours, and all other transfers are generally short and integrated into the daily hiking plan.
Fitness, Terrain and Trail Expectations
How difficult is the activity on MT Sobek's Tour du Mont Blanc Hiking Tour?
This is a demanding Level 4 hiking trip with ten consecutive days hiking in mountainous terrain, where trails can be rocky, steep, and muddy. Expect long rewarding days with sustained ascents and descents over the course of the trip.
Do I need prior experience?
Previous hiking experience is strongly recommended. You should be comfortable hiking all day for multiple consecutive days on uneven mountain trails with significant elevation gain and loss. Consult the Level 4 Training Guide provided for more details.
How should I train or prepare for hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc?
Building a strong cardio base is essential for this trip. We recommend giving yourself several months to prepare, with regular aerobic exercise such as hiking, brisk walking, cycling, stair climbing, or similar activities that elevate your heart rate. Aim for consistency—multiple workouts per week are more effective than occasional long efforts.
Hiking is the most important form of preparation. Whenever possible, train on hilly or mountainous terrain to simulate the sustained ascents and descents that you will experience on the trail. If hills aren’t available, stair machines or repeated stair climbing are good alternatives. Downhill conditioning is important, as long descents can be just as demanding as climbs.
Training with a loaded daypack will help build strength and endurance. Start with a light pack and gradually add weight as your trip approaches, making sure it’s carried comfortably and doesn’t strain your back or shoulders. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for this itinerary—if you plan to use them, practice hiking with poles during training.
Equally important is breaking in your gear. Train in the hiking boots, socks, and pack you’ll use on the trip, so everything feels familiar and comfortable by your departure date. Some guests benefit from arriving a day or two early in Chamonix to rest, recover from travel, and acclimate before hiking begins.
Consistent, well-rounded preparation will make the long days more enjoyable and allow you to fully focus on the experience once you’re on the trail.
Is there exposure or technical terrain on the Tour du Mont Blanc?
This is not a technical climbing trip, but there are sections of rocky terrain, scree, and moderate exposure. While dramatic views from the trail and elevated vistas are a highlight for many on this trip, we understand they aren't for everyone. Most of the trails are wide enough to get some distance between you and any drop-offs and scenic overlooks. If you have a severe sensitivity to heights, you may find a few sections challenging. Sure-footedness is important and trekking poles are strongly recommended for additional stability. Your guides manage pacing and route choices carefully to ensure safety and a good Tour du Mont Blanc experience.
Can I hike at my own pace?
We hike as a group with regular breaks. Guides help manage pacing so everyone can hike comfortably while maintaining safety and group cohesion.
What if I want to skip a day?
Alps Tour du Mont Blanc Hiking is a Level 4 trip, and all guests should come prepared to complete the itinerary as designed. Many hiking days connect towns or cross high mountain passes, and there is often limited or no vehicle access, which means the route must be hiked through once you have started.
That said, options can vary by day and location. On select days when the group is based in or near a town, it may be possible to sit out a hike and rejoin the group later. Days 7 and 10 start and end at the same hotel location, and guests may choose to relax at the hotel without having to change locations on these days. Your guides will always explain the day’s plan and help assess what is realistic and safe based on access, logistics, and current conditions.
How much free time will I have?
Most days are full and active, with a brief time in the evenings to relax after enjoying dinner.
Accommodations and Meals
What should I expect from accommodations on this trip?
You'll stay in carefully selected hotels in alpine towns and villages, chosen for location and comfort on the planned hiking route. Rooms and bathrooms are often smaller than typical US hotels, and amenities can be simple, reflecting historic buildings and mountain settings. Over the course of many decades operating around the Mont Blanc Massif, we've carefully curated these properties to maximize the quality of your experience, balancing comfort, trail access, and transfer times.
Will I have access to Wi-Fi and electricity?
Wi-Fi and electricity are available at all hotels, though connections can be slower and intermittent in more remote areas. The Wi-Fi signal is typically the strongest in hotel common spaces.
What meals are included?
All meals from dinner on Day 1 through breakfast on Day 12 are included on this trip, except for one dinner on Day 7, as noted in your Detailed Trip Itinerary. Lunches are typically enjoyed picnic style when the weather cooperates.
What is the food like on the Tour du Mont Blanc?
Meals on this trip reflect classic French, Italian, and Swiss alpine cuisine, designed to be hearty, nourishing, and well-suited to long, active hiking days. You’ll enjoy food that emphasizes fresh, regional ingredients, and simple preparations that provide plenty of energy and comfort after time on the trail.
Breakfasts are served at the hotels and are typically buffet-style, featuring items such as fresh breads, butter and jam, cereals, yogurt, cheese, fruit, and hot drinks including coffee and tea. These breakfasts are meant to be filling and flexible, allowing you to fuel up according to your appetite and the day’s hike.
Lunches are picnic-style and include a variety of sandwich fixings, salads, cheeses, fruit, and snacks. Snacks are also offered at the beginning of the day, so you can have them handy in your pack along the trail.
Dinners are typically served later than is common in the US. Usually enjoyed at the hotel or a nearby local restaurant, there are often three courses, starting with soup or salad, followed by a main dish and dessert. Expect meals that are rich and comforting, often featuring pasta, potatoes, rice, or other high-energy staples, paired with meats such as chicken or beef, or vegetarian alternatives. Fresh baked bread is a consistent accompaniment, and desserts often reflect local traditions.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes, we can accommodate many common dietary restrictions on this trip with advance notice.
Let us know about your dietary restrictions and food allergies as soon as possible, so we can coordinate with guides, hotels, and restaurants. Please also list these on your Participant Information Form.
The Tour du Mont Blanc is a hiking trip through charming small mountain villages, where kitchens and ingredient availability can be limited. While restaurants along the route have become increasingly experienced with common dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, options may be more limited than at home.
Are single rooms available?
Yes, a limited number of single rooms are available on this trip. About a third of our travelers go solo, and single room inventory often books up quickly!
Please note that the single supplement reflects the cost of a private room. Guests who prefer to share may request a roommate and pay the per-person double occupancy rate if paired with a roommate.
Are triple rooms available?
Triple rooms are not offered on this trip to ensure all accommodations meet MT Sobek standards for your comfort.
Packing and Gear
What should I pack for the Tour du Mont Blanc hiking in the Alps?
Focus on dressing in layers to accommodate varying weather conditions: waterproof rain jacket and pants, warm wool and synthetic layers, sun protection, and a comfortable daypack. Sturdy hiking footwear is essential.
Full rain protection—a waterproof, breathable rain jacket, and rain pants, such as Gore-Tex—is important throughout the season, as wind and rain can cause temperatures to drop rapidly, even in summer. Warm gloves and a hat that covers your ears are also important to carry at all times of year.
Layering is key on the Tour du Mont Blanc. You may hike in very warm or cold conditions, sometimes on the same day. We recommend synthetic or wool/synthetic blend clothing that insulates well, wicks moisture, and dries quickly. Cotton is discouraged in cold or wet conditions, as it retains moisture and can lead to chilling. Each day, you should plan to carry a warm layer and rain shell in your daypack, even if the weather looks clear when you set out. Being well layered and prepared allows you to stay comfortable and enjoy the hiking no matter what the mountains deliver. You may or may not need to use all the items that we recommend depending on the conditions you encounter on your trip, but it’s important to carry them in case they are needed.
Be sure to review the full Packing List provided for the trip.
Do I need trekking poles or specialty gear?
Trekking poles are strongly recommended for balance and joint support on steep ascents and descents and are not provided by MT Sobek on this trip. Collapsible trekking poles pack best for travel. Keep in mind that trekking poles typically need to travel in your checked luggage, rather than your carry-on bag. No technical climbing gear is required.
What size daypack should I bring?
A 25–35-liter daypack with a hip belt is ideal for water, lunch, layers, rain gear, and personal items. Bring a waterproof rain cover well-fitted to your pack.
Can I bring more than one bag?
Guests should plan to bring one main piece of luggage and a daypack. Because vehicle space is limited, packing efficiently is important.
On this itinerary, luggage transfer is included, meaning your bags are moved from hotel to hotel while you hike—so you can focus on the trail, not your gear. Extra luggage may be stored at the hotel where you spend the first and last nights of this trip if needed. Luggage storage is also available at Geneva airport for an additional fee.
Are there any seasonally required items?
Regardless of the month you travel, you should be prepared for classic mountain weather, which can change quickly and dramatically over the course of a single day. It is common to start hiking in a T-shirt at lower elevations and need warm layers, wind protection, or rain gear as you gain altitude or as conditions shift.
What kind of footwear should I bring for this trip?
Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential for this trip. You’ll be hiking on rocky, uneven alpine trails that can be muddy or wet, and long ascents and descents make good traction and ankle support especially important. Medium-weight boots with solid lug soles work best and help protect your feet from sharp rocks and sustained downhill impact.
Some hikers are comfortable using low-ankle trail shoes in certain conditions, but you should also bring high-ankle hiking boots in case trail conditions or weather require extra stability. Whatever footwear you choose, it’s critical that it fits well and is fully broken in before the trip. Hiking in unfamiliar terrain for multiple days in a row puts added stress on feet and ankles, and reliable, well-tested footwear makes a meaningful difference in comfort and safety.
Will I have access to laundry during the trip?
Yes, although laundry service is typically only available at the hotel in Courmayeur, where you stay on Nights 6 and 7. Ask about laundry service turnaround times when you arrive at the hotel to confirm availability. You may also hand-wash small quick-drying items in your room. A small travel clothesline and a packet of detergent are handy for this. Laundry service is not available at all hotels, so plan accordingly.
Should I bring a personal medical kit?
Yes. Your guide will also carry a first aid kit, but we recommend you bring your own supply of basics such as blister care, bandages, sunscreen, lip protection, and electrolytes to have handy. Please bring a sufficient supply of your personal medications.
On-the-Ground Travel Tips
What is the weather like on the Tour du Mont Blanc?
Weather in the Alps varies significantly by elevation, valley, and day, and conditions can change quickly as you cross high passes. Even within the same day, you may experience sun, wind, rain, and cooler temperatures at higher elevations—this is classic mountain weather.
June often brings fresh early-season conditions, with average temperatures around 53-64°F in Chamonix and 51-62°F in Courmayeur. July and August are typically the warmest months, averaging 58-70°F in Chamonix and 56-68°F in Courmayeur, though afternoon storms are still possible. September is cooler and often feels crisper, with averages around 53-63°F in Chamonix and 51-61°F in Courmayeur, especially at higher elevations.
Because wet or windy weather can lower body temperature quickly, you should always be prepared with waterproof layers, warm insulation, and clothing that can be easily added or removed as conditions change throughout the day.
What currency should I bring?
France and Italy use the Euro; Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc. Credit cards are widely accepted, but having some local currency is useful.
Will I have cell service?
Cell service is generally available in towns and often in the mountains, though coverage can vary. Download important information for offline access.
Will I need electrical adapters or a voltage converter?
Yes. France, Italy, and Switzerland all use 220-240 volts, so you’ll want to check whether your personal electronics support dual voltage. Many phone and camera chargers do, but some devices may require a voltage converter.
You will also need the appropriate plug adapters, as outlet types vary by country. France typically uses Type E, Italy uses Type F or Type L, and Switzerland most commonly uses Type J with some Type C compatibility.
How much extra money should I budget?
We recommend budgeting approximately $600–$800 for personal expenses such as souvenirs, laundry, drinks, one night's dinner on your own, and optional gratuities.
How is tipping handled on this trip?
Tipping is optional and based on your overall experience, but it is a common way to show appreciation for the care, professionalism, and expertise of your guides. Your trip is supported by at least one MT Sobek guide for every eight guests, and gratuities for hotel and restaurant staff are already included in your trip price.
For this international trip, we typically recommend budgeting the equivalent of $150-$250 USD per guide, per participant, in Euros. You will also have a dedicated driver for the duration of the trip, and a gratuity of $75-$100 USD per participant, in Euros, is customary.
Specific tipping recommendations for your departure will be outlined in your Final Details, which are sent about three weeks before the trip. Please note that tips should be given in cash, as our local teams are unable to accept gratuities via credit card, checks, or payment apps. Tipping is always at your discretion and should reflect your personal level of satisfaction.
Health and Safety
Do you recommend travel insurance?
Yes, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance can help cover trip cancellations or interruptions, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, travel delays, and other unexpected situations.
We offer travel insurance with Arch RoamRight and will be happy to provide you with a quote. Please see our Travel Resources page for more information.
Do I need to be cleared by a doctor to participate?
There is no standard required clearance from a doctor to participate in this trip. You will have an opportunity to discuss your fitness and preparedness for the trip with MT Sobek. If you have medical concerns or questions about fitness, consult your healthcare provider before traveling.
What medical support is available during the trip?
Our MT Sobek guides are professionally trained and certified to the Accompagnateur en Moyenne Montagne (AMM), or Mid-Mountain Guide standard, as approved and recognized by the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UILMA), and carry medical kits in case of emergencies. Medical facilities are available in towns but can be far from remote trail locations.
What kind of challenges should I expect on the Tour du Mont Blanc?
To get the most out of your trip, it's helpful to be prepared for the challenges of the trail, such as sustained elevation gains and losses, rocky or uneven terrain, and the variable weather typical of the Alps. Your guides are there to support you every step of the way, managing the daily pace, making adjustments based on conditions as needed, and sharing helpful info to help you stay comfortable and in high spirits.
How can I stay healthy during the trip?
Staying healthy on this trip starts with good pre-trip preparation and good daily habits. Hydrate consistently throughout the day, especially during long hikes, and eat regularly to keep your energy levels steady. On warmer days, using powdered electrolytes can help replenish minerals lost through sweat.
Foot care is especially important. Wear well-fitting, broken-in footwear, keep your feet dry when possible, and address hot spots or blisters early using moleskin or Compeed patches. Liner socks can also help reduce friction. Simple steps like trimming toenails before the trip and changing socks as needed can make a big difference over consecutive hiking days.
Hand hygiene matters as well—wash or sanitize your hands frequently, particularly before meals.
Prioritize rest and recovery in the evenings, and don’t hesitate to talk with your guide about pacing, layering, or minor concerns as they arise. Addressing small issues early is one of the best ways to stay comfortable and enjoy the full experience.
Trail Support and Emergencies
What if I have an emergency and need to be evacuated?
Your guides are trained in emergency response and will take appropriate action based on the situation, terrain, and conditions at the time. Medical facilities are available in the region but may be some distance away, and evacuation can be complex and time-consuming. For this reason, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation coverage.
Are bathrooms available on the trail?
Bathrooms are available at hotels and some points along the trail, but not always at frequent or reliable intervals. Guides can provide Leave No Trace guidance when facilities are not available to ensure you can use the bathroom outdoors responsibly, safely, and privately.
What is the guide-to-guest ratio on MT Sobek's Tour du Mont Blanc trips?
This trip is staffed with one guide for eight guests, plus a dedicated driver. An additional guide will be added for larger groups.
Extensions and Local Exploration
Are trip extensions available before or after the trip?
No. MT Sobek does not offer pre- or post-trip extensions for this itinerary. Your Adventure Coordinator can provide suggestions to make the most of additional time.
What are the best things to do if I arrive early or stay late?
You may enjoy exploring Chamonix on foot, riding the Aiguille du Midi cable car, visiting the Alpine Museum to learn about regional history, taking easy valley walks, visiting cafes and shops, and planning a relaxed buffer day to adjust to travel and time zone differences and weather. In Geneva, walking around Lake Geneva to the Jet d'Eau, taking a ferry ride, visiting the Palais des Nations or the Patek Phillipe Museum, and checking out one of the flea markets—a favorite is the Plainpalais Flea Market—are popular activities.
