FAQs About Patagonia Adventure Tours

When is the best time to hike Patagonia?

The prime trekking season runs from late October to mid-April. With the seasons reversed in the Southern Hemisphere, this means late spring is Oct/Nov, summer is Dec-Feb, and early fall is Mar/Apr. The summer window offers the longest daylight hours and typically the mildest temperatures for hiking, while spring and fall tend to bring quieter trails and more wildlife sightings. Photographers enjoy these months for colorful spring wildflowers or fall foliage that contrast with the rugged granite peaks.

At any time of year, hikers should be prepared for unpredictable weather conditions, characterized by legendary strong winds, rapid changes, and temperature swings. This is mountain weather, often referred to as “four seasons in one day,” and is part of the untamed wilds of Patagonia. Come prepared at the start of each hike and enjoy the ride.

How fit do I need to be?

It depends on the route. More challenging hikes, such as the multi-day W Route in Torres del Paine—which includes the base of the iconic Towers, the French Valley, and passing below the “Horns” (Cuernos)—and the high glacial lakes just beneath Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre in Los Glaciares—get you close to the major draws, but do require a high level of fitness—you should be able to hike for 11-13 miles on consecutive days with elevation gains and losses ranging from 1,000-3,400 feet, over terrain that is often rocky and uneven.

However, there are more moderate trails that still offer sweeping Patagonian views! These trails are sometimes quieter, offering a sense of wilderness and better opportunities to spot local wildlife. For these routes you should be able to hike 6-11 miles on mountain terrain with more than 1,500 feet of elevation gains and losses. Regardless of the route, training with a weighted pack before you arrive is highly recommended.

Do I need a guide to hike in Patagonia?

While many trails are well-marked, a guide is invaluable for navigating the complex logistics (permits, park entries, luggage handling, and transport). More importantly, they provide safety during sudden weather shifts and share deep insights into the local flora, fauna, and geology that you would likely miss on your own. All our trips are led by local experts to make the most of your time in Patagonia.

What is the difference between the W Trek and O Circuit?

The W Trek: Hits the “greatest hits” (Base of the Towers, French Valley, Grey Glacier) and takes about 4–5 days. It is perfect for those short on time or who prefer to avoid any camping.
The O Circuit: Includes the W but adds the remote “backside” of the park. It takes 8–9 days and offers multiple days with true solitude along with views of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

What hiking gear should I pack for Patagonia?

Patagonian weather is notoriously changeable, so being prepared for all conditions is the first step to enjoying your time on the trail. Here are some quick tips:

The Layering System: Moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece mid-layer, and a windbreaking shell
Rain Gear: High-quality, fully waterproof rain jacket and rain pants, and waterproof gloves
Boots: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots that are well broken-in
Trekking Poles: Essential for saving your knees on steep descents and rough terrain
Wind Protection: A baseball cap or hat with a chin strap, plus a buff/neck gaiter, which can also help keep a cap on your head

MT Sobek provides a full packing list when you book.

Can I book a private or custom trip to Patagonia?

Yes! We offer a private itinerary featuring the “W” route from luminous Lago Grey into the wilds of the French Valley, and up to the base of the towers in Torres del Paine, ready to make your own. We also offer tailor-made custom trips designed to suit your interests and level of luxury.

How long has MT Sobek been leading trips in Patagonia?

Our company was the first to offer a tour circumnavigating the Paine Massif in 1987. The route we called the “Wondrous Towers of Paine” later became known as the O Route, and we can’t wait to show you the wonders of Patagonia today, in MT Sobek style. Our long history operating hiking adventures in the region means we work with the best local guides and craft itineraries based on experience, not place names.

“By the third day, I had already started scheming of ways to return to the rainbows and rolling trails, carved mountains, teal lakes, fiery skies, thundering calving glaciers, and the grassy… or rocky… expanses in between.”
