Trek with our legendary guiding team in Nepal and follow experts who understand the terrain and climate of the Khumbu. Lhakpa Sherpa was born in Namche Bazaar to a mountaineering family. His father was a climbing Sherpa and went to the South Col on several expeditions, including the 1963 American Everest expedition. Lhakpa has worked with MT Sobek since 1983, first as sirdar and now as a top trekking guide, and is involved in the Khumbu Climbing School to train local Sherpas to guide and assist climbing teams on Everest. Lhakpa has a deep interest in environmental issues and speaks Nepali, Sherpa, and Tibetan as well as English. His lifelong knowledge of Buddhism, as practiced by the Sherpas, also adds to his guiding.

While the Everest region experiences an influx of over 500 daily visitors during peak seasons, MTS has carved out a unique itinerary that offers respite from the crowds. By choosing less frequented routes, trekkers can revel in the natural beauty of the region without the distractions of mass tourism.

4. Warm-Up Hikes & Acclimatization

Mountain Travel Sobek’s warm-up and acclimatization hikes for the Everest Base Camp trek are designed to prepare trekkers for the high-altitude challenges ahead. These hikes serve as crucial acclimatization steps, allowing participants to gradually adapt to the thinning air and reduced oxygen levels.

The warm-up hikes typically take place in lower-altitude regions, such as the lush Khumbu Valley, enabling trekkers to ease into the trekking rhythm while enjoying stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. As the trek progresses, acclimatization hikes take trekkers to higher elevations, ensuring a safe and gradual ascent towards Everest Base Camp. This thoughtful approach significantly enhances the overall trekking experience and safety for participants.

Warm-Up Hike in Lukla

Rather than rushing to Phakding on the first day, MTS begins with a warm-up hike from Lukla. This gentle initiation into the trek not only aids in acclimatization but also provides trekkers with an opportunity to soak in the surroundings.

Hit the Trail Early

With impeccable timing, MTS ensures that trekkers hit the trail before the arrival of flights into Lukla. This strategic move allows MTS guests to have the trail all to themselves, setting the tone for an intimate and immersive experience.

Departing from Monjo while others start from Phakding also puts MTS ahead of the crowd. The trail remains uncongested, allowing trekkers to savor the journey.

Acclimatization Trek to Namche Bazaar

MTS takes a deliberate approach to acclimatization, devoting three days to reach Namche Bazaar. This pacing gives trekkers the best chance to acclimate to the high altitudes, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable journey. There are also opportunities to visit cultural sites in the morning, which has the two-fold result of avoiding the rush and immersing trekkers in the full Himalayan experience.

Visit Ama Dablam Base Camp

A visit to Ama Dablam Base Camp, a rarity in most itineraries, sets MTS apart. This extraordinary day excursion unveils a side of the Everest region that few have the privilege to witness.

Claim the Ridge

Even as trekkers approach the vicinity of Everest, MTS continues to chart a course less traveled. Choosing to ascend Tabuche Ridge instead of Nagardzong affords MTS trekkers an unobstructed view and the solitude to fully absorb the majesty of their surroundings.

We also take a different route up to Lobuche from all the other trekking groups—through Tashinga, Pangboche and Pheriche rather than Dingboche. This is one further step to avoiding the crowds.

Reach Everest Base Camp

Base camp day! An early start helps ensure trekkers arrive before the clouds do. From Lobuche it is a tough trek first to Gorak Shep and then to base camp (17,600′), initially following the top of the moraine and then descending onto the boulder-strewn glacier. Enjoy lunch, then continue for a couple of hours to reach Everest Base Camp! Enjoy sensational views of the Khumbu icefall and surrounding mountain majesty.

The Return Journey

As the journey nears its culmination, MTS introduces the Omaga route, an idyllic pastoral path unfrequented by other companies. This final leg of the journey is emblematic of MTS’s commitment to providing a truly distinctive experience.

5. Trail Comforts

Sustenance at higher altitudes takes on a new significance and hearty meals to fuel your hike are essential. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided every day of your hike and trekkers are also fortified with carefully curated snacks. This touch goes a long way in maintaining energy levels and enhancing the overall experience. Our expert guides also help trekkers make good dinner choices to help maintain fitness. Plus, in a region where every step demands attention to one’s physical well-being, MTS provides filtered or boiled water for drinking.

Hot water for washing and comforting hot water bottles for bedtime makes for an added commitment to guest comfort and safety.
