Your Guides

The best people to immerse you in a destination are the ones who live there, which is why we feature local Adventure Guides on our trips. Here are a few that you might meet on this adventure.

Juliette Q.

Juliette Q.

Juliette has been a trekking guide since 2007 and lives close to Chamonix, where she leads MT Sobekโ€™s Tour du Mont Blanc adventure and several other summer hiking trips. When sheโ€™s not guiding, Juliette works as a nurse, and you can also find her mountaineering and rock climbing during. Juliette has a legendary smile and possesses deep local knowledge, which pairs well with her hiking experience and strong leadership qualities.

Noemi D.

Noemi D.

Noemi grew up in the Carpathian mountains of Romania but life brought her to the south of the Alps twenty years ago. Throughout the years, she has traveled to the four corners of the world and in 2013, while on a year-long journey across the globe, much of it spent on her sailboat, she decided to pursue her dream job and became a mountain leader. Ever since, she has shared her passion for the mountains with clients from all over the world.

Julien L.

Julien L.

Julien's educational background is steeped in natural science. He is a trained French biologist and agronomist with a passion for exploring and sharing the wonders of nature. Based in Cordon, near Chamonix, he has conducted research across Europe, with a particular interest in European wildcats. With more than 15 years of guiding experience in the Northern Alps and Norway, Julien brings expertise, enthusiasm, and a deep love for the outdoors to every adventure. An avid adventurer, he enjoys long-distance walks, including completing the Pyrenees Haute Route and thru-hiking New Zealand. When not guiding, you'll likely find him hiking, running, or mountaineering in search of his next great challenge.

FAQs

Trip Overview

What makes MT Sobek's Alps Tour du Mont Blanc Express Hiking trip unique?

This express itinerary delivers the essence of the Tour du Mont Blanc in just eight days, with six days of hiking tracing the classic circuit through France, Italy, and Switzerland while focusing on the most scenic and rewarding sections of trail. This is a thoughtfully designed “best of” Mont Blanc experience that balances ambitious trekking with comfort, logistics, and deep regional knowledge.

Pioneering Expertise: MT Sobek has been guiding the Tour du Mont Blanc since 1970, and this itinerary was built on our extensive expertise combined with guest requests for a trip that features the very best sections of the classic TMB route in a more compact adventure.

Outstanding Local Guides: Hike with expert guides who call this place home, offering the kind of first-hand insights and deep personal connection that only a true local can provide.

Expert Design: Big alpine hiking days are supported with a dedicated driver and hand-selected mountain hotels that allow for a true point-to-point journey without unnecessary backtracking, allowing you to focus completely on enjoying the very best of this classic route.

When is the best time to experience hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc Express?

June through September are the months when trails, accommodations, and mountain services are most reliably available across France, Italy, and Switzerland. MT Sobek trips are timed specifically for this window to ensure optimal conditions for your hiking adventure.

Early to Midsummer (June to August): Experience the peak of alpine beauty with lush green trails and wildflower blooms, enjoying the warmest temperatures and longest daylight hours for our ambitious daily stages.

Late Summer (September): Benefit from cooler hiking temperatures and a slightly quieter trail atmosphere, perfectly timed for when the high-mountain light is at its most dramatic.

What is the group size for this trip?
The typical group size for this trip is between 5 and 16 guests, creating an experience that feels personal, relaxed, and thoughtfully paced. Small group travel allows us to share moments that make a journey truly memorable.
What is the minimum age for this trip?

The standard minimum age for this trip is 18. This itinerary is designed with adult travelers in mind, based on daily activity levels, accommodations, and overall group experience. Families or groups with children as young as 16 please check out our private departures .

What makes this a Level 4 trip?

This is a Level 4 trip due to the demands of consecutive alpine hiking days. Expect 6 to 8 hours of hiking most days, covering roughly 8 to 12 miles with cumulative daily elevation changes ranging from 2,300 to 4,200 feet.

Sustained Effort: The itinerary requires six consecutive days of vigorous trekking through high-altitude terrain without scheduled rest days to truly maximize your experience of this iconic route.

Physical Demands: You will cross epic high passes such as Col du Bonhomme (7,641') and Grand Col Ferret (8,300'), requiring strong cardiovascular fitness. Expect sustained, challenging climbs and descents to feel more strenuous through sections at higher altitudes.

Mountain Terrain: The route involves alternating ascending and descending terrain on trails that can be rocky, steep, or muddy. The potential for rapidly changing mountain weather can add to the challenge.

Will the itinerary change?

We plan the itinerary carefully, but adjustments may be needed due to weather, trail conditions, or other factors. MT Sobek and our guides make thoughtful decisions when needed in real time to keep the experience safe and enjoyable, and any significant changes will be communicated as early and as clearly as possible.

Arriving and Departing

Where does the trip start and end?
The trip begins and ends in Chamonix, France, with scheduled group transfers to and from the Geneva Airport (GVA).
What airport should I fly into and out of for the Tour du Mont Blanc?
Geneva Airport (GVA) is the recommended arrival and departure airport. It offers the most direct and efficient transfers to Chamonix.
When should I book my flights?
Once your reservation with MT Sobek is finalized, we will notify you of your trip's status. After your departure is confirmed to operate, flights and travel arrangements may be purchased. While we can often confirm departures in advance, some decisions may be finalized closer to final payment.
When should I plan to arrive and depart?

Once your booking is finalized with MT Sobek and your trip has been confirmed to operate, flights may be purchased. If you are unsure of the status of your trip, be sure to check with your Adventure Coordinator prior to booking non-refundable flights.

Arrival: Plan to arrive in Geneva by 1:00 pm on Day 1 to join the provided 2:00 pm group transfer to Chamonix. We strongly recommend arriving at least one day early to allow for international travel delays, adjust to the time zone, and settle in before hiking begins.

Departure: You may book departing flights from Geneva any time after 12:00 pm on the last day of the trip. The group transfer departs Chamonix shortly after breakfast and arrives at the airport at approximately 10:00 am.

Who will I meet on Day 1, and where?
Your guide will meet you in the Arrivals Hall at Geneva Airport for the 90-minute group transfer. In Chamonix, you'll gather with your guide and fellow travelers for an orientation and welcome dinner.
What hotels do you recommend if I arrive early or stay late?

If arriving early and staying in Geneva, we recommend staying at an airport-area hotel like the Movenpick Hotel Geneva , Holiday Inn Express Geneva Airport , or Crowne Plaza Geneva , or at a centrally located hotel such as Hotel Royal or Hotel Edelweiss . Staying at a recommended Geneva hotel makes your trip start and departure logistics much simpler.

If you want to join the group in Chamonix, please book any additional nights at the group hotel directly with the property and, on arrival, let them know that you are traveling with MT Sobek. Room assignments for the tour are finalized closer to departure, so while your guides make every effort to keep you in the same room you booked on your own, it may not always be possible to avoid a change to the MT Sobek-booked room on the first night.

Do I need a passport or visa for this trip?
A valid passport is required to enter Switzerland, France, and Italy. Most countries require that passports be valid for at least six months beyond the end of your trip and contain at least one blank page for entry stamps. US citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. Non-US citizens should consult their local embassy or consulate to confirm current entry requirements.

Transportation and Transfer

Are airport transfers included?
Yes. One scheduled group transfer is included on Day 1 from Geneva to Chamonix and on the last day from Chamonix to Geneva. Transfers outside these windows are not included.
Can MT Sobek help arrange a private transfer?

Transfers outside the provided group transfers are not included and must be arranged by guests. Guests typically select from among these three providers for private transfer services: Chamexpress , Mountain Drop Offs , and Alpybus .

How much time will we spend in vehicles during the trip?
Most days are hiking focused, with short transfers used to connect trailheads and lodging. Transfer times generally range from about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the day.
Are there any especially long travel days?
The longest drives occur on the first and last days of the trip, with 90-minute drives to and from Chamonix, and there are a few mid-trip days with longer valley-to-valley transfers to keep the route moving smoothly around Mont Blanc. These drives are an intentional part of the design and allow us to maximize time on the trail rather than repeating terrain.

Fitness, Terrain and Trail Expectations

How difficult is the hiking on Alps Tour du Mont Blanc Express?

This trip is challenging, featuring six back-to-back days of hiking through rugged mountain terrain. You should be prepared for 8 to 12 miles of trekking over 6 to 8 hours each day, with trails that can be rocky, steep, or muddy. Arriving with a high level of fitness is essential for managing the sustained effort required for this action-packed itinerary.

Significant Elevation: Expect some serious hill climbs, with elevation gain as high as 4,200 feet in one day, and descents with maximum elevation loss up to 3,000 feet in one day. Hiking feels more strenuous when at higher elevations.

Consecutive Effort: The compact nature of this trip requires multiple back-to-back days of high-altitude hiking without scheduled rest days to maximize your experience of the best sections of this iconic route.

Variable Terrain and Weather: Mountain weather and varied trail surfaces, including mud and rock, contribute to the overall physical demand.

Do I need prior experience?
Prior hiking experience is strongly recommended. You should be comfortable hiking for multiple full days on uneven terrain with continuous steep uphill and downhill sections.
How should I train or prepare for Alps Tour du Mont Blanc Express Hiking?

The best preparation is steady, consistent training well in advance of your trip. Build a strong cardio base with activities that raise your heart rate—such as brisk walking, hiking, stair climbing, cycling, or similar workouts—aiming for several sessions each week. At least one workout should be a hike, ideally on hilly terrain, to simulate the demands of the trail. As you get closer to departure, add longer training hikes on consecutive days. At least once prior to the start of your trip, simulate significant ascents and descents of several thousand feet on trails or stairs to help ensure you’re prepared.

Practice hiking both uphill and downhill, as long descents are just as demanding as climbs. Train with a daypack and gradually work up to carrying about 10 to 12 pounds, similar to what you’ll carry on the trip. Break in your hiking boots during training hikes and use the same footwear and gear you plan to bring. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for this itinerary. If you plan to use them, practice hiking with your poles during training. Allowing several months to train and acclimate to this routine will make a meaningful difference in how much you enjoy the experience.

Is there any exposure or technical terrain on this trip?
This is not a technical climbing trip but there are sections of rocky terrain, scree, and moderate exposure. While dramatic views from the trail and elevated vistas are a highlight for many, we understand they are not for everyone. Most of the trails are wide enough to get some distance between you and any drop offs and scenic overlooks. If you have a severe sensitivity to heights you may find a few sections challenging. Please note many of our previous guests have expressed that the trails around Mont Blanc are more technical than those found in the U.S. So, we strongly recommend adequate training, the use of hiking poles and sturdy, mid-height boots.
Can I hike at my own pace?

We hike as a group with regular breaks. Guides help manage pacing so everyone can hike comfortably while?maintaining safety and group cohesion.

What if I want to skip a day?
This is a Level 4, point-to-point itinerary, and all guests should come prepared to participate in the trip as designed. We change hotels every night on this trip. Options for skipping a day are limited and vary by location, trail access, and transportation logistics. In some cases, it may be possible to rest and travel separately with the driver, but the driver will need to maintain an established schedule and will not be able to provide customized tours or activity options. This cannot always be guaranteed and can't be planned in advance. Your guides will always help assess the safest and most practical option if an issue comes up, with the overall group experience and safety in mind.
How much free time will I have?
Most days are full hiking days. Evenings typically offer time to relax, shower, and explore the village briefly before enjoying dinner.

Accommodations and Meals

What should I expect from accommodations on this trip?
You'll stay in a mix of alpine hotels chosen for location and comfort. Some properties are rustic, especially in smaller villages, while Chamonix and Courmayeur offer more elevated options. Rooms and bathrooms can be small, and amenities may be basic, but locations are ideal for the route. Over the course of many decades operating in this area, we've carefully curated these properties to maximize the quality of your experience, balancing comfort, trail access, and transfer times.
Will I have access to Wi-Fi and electricity?

Wi-Fi and electricity are available at all hotels, though connections can be slower and intermittent in more remote areas. The Wi-Fi signal is typically strongest in hotel common spaces.

What meals are included?
All meals are included on this trip from dinner on the first day to breakfast on the last day. Lunches are typically enjoyed picnic style when the weather cooperates.
What is the food like on Alps Tour du Mont Blanc Express Hiking?

One of the joys of hiking through France, Italy, and Switzerland is how much the food reflects where you are each day. You can expect hearty, mountain-friendly meals built around fresh regional ingredients—think cheeses, cured meats, rustic breads, pasta dishes, sausages, and warming soups and stews in the countryside. And of course, you will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy local favorites like French pastries, Italian gelato, and Swiss chocolate along the way.

Breakfasts are served at the hotels and are typically buffet-style, featuring items such as fresh breads, butter and jam, cereals, yogurt, cheese, fruit, and hot drinks including coffee and tea. These breakfasts are meant to be filling and flexible, allowing you to fuel up according to your appetite and the day’s hike.

Lunches are picnic-style and include a variety of sandwich fixings, salads, cheeses, fruit, and snacks. Snacks are also offered at the beginning of the day, so you can have them handy in your pack along the trail.

Dinners are served later than is common in the US, close to 7:00 pm local time or sometimes later, as is typical in this region. Usually enjoyed at the hotel or a nearby local restaurant, dinners are often three courses, starting with soup or salad, followed by a main dish and dessert. Expect meals that are rich and comforting, generally featuring pasta, potatoes, polenta, or other high-energy staples, paired with meats such as chicken or beef, or vegetarian alternatives. Fresh baked bread is a consistent accompaniment, and desserts often reflect local traditions.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes, we can accommodate many common dietary restrictions on this trip with advance notice. Let us know about your dietary restrictions and food allergies as soon as possible, so we can coordinate with guides, hotels, and restaurants. Please also list these on your Participant Information Form.

Because this is a point-to-point hiking trip through small mountain villages, kitchens and ingredient availability can be limited. While restaurants along the route have become increasingly experienced with common dietary needs such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, options may be more limited than at home.

Are single rooms available?

Yes, a limited number of single rooms are available on this trip. About a third of our travelers go solo, and single room inventory often books up quickly!

Please note that the single supplement reflects the cost of a private room. Guests who prefer to share may request a roommate and pay the per-person double occupancy rate if paired with a roommate.

Are triple rooms available?
Triple rooms are not offered on this trip to ensure all accommodations meet MT Sobek standards for your comfort.

Packing and Gear

What should I pack for Alps Tour du Mont Blanc Express Hiking?

Focus on dressing in layers to accommodate varying weather conditions. It is common to start hiking in a T-shirt at lower elevations and need warm layers, wind protection, or rain gear as you gain altitude or as conditions shift.

Versatile Layers: You may hike in very warm or cold conditions, sometimes on the same day. We recommend synthetic or wool/synthetic blend clothing that insulates well, wicks moisture, and dries quickly. Cotton is discouraged in cold or wet conditions, as it retains moisture and can lead to chilling. Each day, you should plan to carry a warm layer and rain shell in your daypack, even if the weather looks clear when you set out. Being well layered and prepared allows you to stay comfortable and enjoy the hiking no matter what the mountains deliver.

Wind and Rain Protection: No matter when you are hiking, full rain protection—a waterproof, breathable rain jacket and rain pants (Gore-Tex or similar)—is essential, as wind and rain can cause temperatures to drop rapidly, even in summer. Warm gloves and a hat that covers your ears are also important to carry at all times.

Sturdy Footwear: Well broken-in footwear is key for hiking on the Tour du Mont Blanc. Purchase hiking boots with ankle support and solid soles well in advance of the trip and train in your boots to reduce the risk of blisters on the trip.

Comfortable Daypack: A quality daypack with 25- to 35-liters of capacity for your water, snacks, layers and other essentials is key. Train with the pack you’ll use on the trip and be sure it has a hipbelt for comfort and weight distribution.

Be sure to review the full Packing List provided for the trip. You may or may not need to use all the items that we recommend depending on the conditions you encounter on your trip, but it is important to carry them in case they are needed.

Do I need trekking poles or specialty gear?
Trekking poles are strongly recommended, especially for long descents and uneven terrain, but they are not required. We recommend you train with the poles you will bring and use on the trip. Collapsible trekking poles should be packed in your checked luggage, rather than your carry-on bag. Trekking poles are not provided on this trip. No technical climbing gear is required.
What size daypack should I bring?
A 25- to 35-liter daypack with a hip belt is ideal. It should comfortably carry water, snacks, extra layers, rain gear, sunscreen, and personal items you want during the day. Bring a waterproof rain cover well fitted to your pack.
Can I bring more than one bag?

Guests should plan to bring one main piece of luggage and a daypack. Because vehicle space is limited, packing efficiently is important.

Extra luggage may be stored at the hotel where we spend the first and last nights of this trip if needed. Luggage storage is also available at Geneva Airport for an additional fee.

Are there any seasonally required items?

Regardless of the month you travel, you should be prepared for mountain weather, which can change quickly and dramatically over the course of a single day throughout the season. The core basics are a waterproof rain jacket and pants, warm wool and synthetic layers, sun protection, and a comfortable daypack. Sturdy hiking footwear is essential.

What kind of footwear should I bring for this trip?

Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential for this trip. You will be hiking on rocky, uneven alpine trails that can be muddy or wet, and long ascents and descents make good traction and ankle support especially important. Medium-weight boots with solid soles work best and help protect your feet from sharp rocks and sustained downhill impact.

Some hikers are comfortable using low-ankle trail shoes in certain conditions, but you should also bring high-ankle hiking boots in case trail conditions or weather require extra stability. Whatever footwear you choose, it is critical that it fits well and is fully broken in before the trip. Hiking in unfamiliar terrain for multiple days in a row puts added stress on feet and ankles, and reliable, well-tested footwear makes a meaningful difference in comfort and safety.

Will I have access to laundry during the trip?
Laundry services are generally not available due to single night stays on all nights of the trip. You may want to hand-wash small quick-drying items in your room. A travel clothesline and a packet of detergent are handy for this.
Should I bring a personal medical kit?
Yes. Your guide will also carry a first aid kit, but we recommend you bring your own supply of basics such as blister care, bandages, sunscreen, lip protection, and electrolytes to have handy. Please bring a sufficient supply of your personal medications.

Weather in the Alps varies significantly by elevation, valley, and day, with conditions that can change quickly. You should be prepared for classic mountain weather, which can include sun, wind, rain, and cooler temperatures all within the same day. MT Sobek times departures from June through September to take advantage of the most reliable window for mountain services and accessible trails.

June (Early Season): Trails feel fresh and green with average temperatures in the towns we visit ranging from 51-64°F. This is typically the peak season for alpine wildflowers.

July & August (Peak Summer): These are the warmest months, with averages between 56-70°F, though afternoon storms remain a possibility in the high mountains.

September (Early Autumn): Conditions are cooler and crisper, with averages around 51° to 63°F, offering quieter trails and a hint of fall color at higher elevations.

The 3.6°F Rule: The temperature ranges above are typical of the towns we visit in the valleys where we start and end our days. As we hike, expect temperatures to drop around 3.6°F for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain. This means that even if it is a warm 70°F in the valley, it can be significantly colder and windier as you reach high-altitude passes like the Grand Col Ferret. Dressing in layers is essential.

What currency should I bring?
France and Italy use the Euro; Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc. Credit cards are widely accepted throughout the trip, but it is still helpful to carry some cash for small purchases. ATMs are readily available in Geneva, Chamonix, and larger towns along the route, and many guests choose to withdraw cash upon arrival rather than exchanging money in advance. You may find that you don't need Swiss Francs for the brief portion of the trip in Switzerland, as the rest of your expenses will typically be in Euros.
Will I have cell service?
Cell service is generally good, including in many mountain areas, but coverage can vary. Download important information for offline access.
Will I need electrical adapters or a voltage converter?
Electricity in France, Italy, and Switzerland operates on 220 to 240 volts, so you will want to confirm that your personal electronics support dual voltage (most phone, camera, and laptop chargers do). You will also need the correct plug adapters, as outlet types vary by country: France uses Type E, Italy uses Type F and Type L, and Switzerland primarily uses Type J and Type C. Multi-plug adapters are convenient for this.
How much extra money should I budget?
Plan on approximately $600 to $800 for personal expenses such as drinks, snacks, souvenirs, laundry, and optional gratuities.
How is tipping handled on this trip?

Tipping is optional and based on your overall experience, but it is a common way to show appreciation for the care, professionalism, and expertise of your guides. Your trip is supported by at least one MT Sobek guide for every eight guests, and gratuities for hotel and restaurant staff are already included in your trip price.

For this international trip, we typically recommend budgeting the equivalent of $100 to $150 per guide per participant, and $55 to $75 per participant for the driver (if separate from the guide), in local currency.

Specific tipping recommendations for your departure will be outlined in your Final Details, which are sent about three weeks before the trip. Please note that tips should be given in cash, as our local teams are unable to accept gratuities via credit card, checks, or payment apps. Tipping is always at your discretion and should reflect your personal level of satisfaction.

Health and Safety

Do you recommend travel insurance?

Yes, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance can help cover trip cancellations or interruptions, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, travel delays, and other unexpected situations.

We offer travel insurance with Arch RoamRight and will be happy to provide you with a quote. Please see our Travel Resources page for more information.

Do I need to be cleared by a doctor to participate?

There is no standard required clearance from a doctor to participate in this trip. You will have an opportunity to discuss your fitness and preparedness for the trip with MT Sobek. If you have medical concerns or questions about fitness, consult your healthcare provider before traveling.

What medical support is available during the trip?
Our guides are professionally trained and certified to the Accompagnateur en Moyenne Montagne (AMM), or Mid-Mountain Guide standard, as approved and recognized by the UILMA, and carry medical kits in case of emergencies. Medical facilities are available in towns but can be far from remote trail locations.
What kind of challenges should I expect on the Tour du Mont Blanc?
To get the most out of your trip, it is helpful to be prepared for the challenges of the trail, such as sustained elevation gains and losses, rocky or uneven terrain, and the variable weather typical of the Alps. Your guides are there to support you every step of the way, managing the daily pace, making adjustments based on conditions as needed, and sharing helpful info to help you stay comfortable and in high spirits.
How can I stay healthy during the trip?

Stay hydrated, eat regularly, manage foot care proactively, and communicate early with your guide about any concerns. Rest and recovery are important on consecutive hiking days.

Staying healthy on this trip starts with good pre-trip preparation and daily habits. Hydrate consistently throughout the day, especially during long hikes, and eat regularly to keep your energy levels steady. On warmer days, using powdered electrolytes can help replenish minerals lost through sweat.

Foot care is especially important. Wear well-fitting, broken-in footwear, keep your feet dry when possible, and address hot spots or blisters early using moleskin or Compeed patches. Liner socks can also help reduce friction. Simple steps like trimming toenails before the trip and changing socks as needed can make a big difference over consecutive hiking days.

Hand hygiene matters as well. Wash or sanitize your hands frequently, particularly before meals. Prioritize rest and recovery in the evenings, and don’t hesitate to talk with your guide about pacing, layering, or minor concerns as they arise. Addressing small issues early is one of the best ways to stay comfortable and enjoy the full experience.

Trail Support and Emergencies

What if I have an emergency and need to be evacuated?
Your guides are trained in emergency response and will take appropriate action based on the situation, terrain, and conditions at the time. Medical facilities are available in the region but may be some distance away, and evacuation can be complex and time-consuming. For this reason, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation coverage.
Are bathrooms available on the trail?
Bathrooms are available at hotels and some points along the trail, but not always at frequent or reliable intervals. Guides can provide Leave No Trace guidance when facilities are not available to ensure you can answer nature's call responsibly, safely, and privately.
What is the guide-to-guest ratio?
This trip is staffed with one guide for up to eight guests, plus a dedicated driver. An additional guide will be added for larger groups.

Extensions and Local Exploration

Are trip extensions available before or after Alps Tour du Mont Blanc Express Hiking?
MT Sobek does not offer pre- or post-trip extensions for this itinerary. Your Adventure Coordinator can provide suggestions to make the most of additional time.
What are the best things to do if I arrive early or stay late?

Many guests enjoy exploring Chamonix on foot, riding the Aiguille du Midi cable car, visiting the Alpine Museum to learn about regional history, taking easy valley walks, visiting cafes and shops, and planning a relaxed buffer day to adjust to travel and time zone differences.

In Geneva, guests typically enjoy walking around Lake Geneva to the Jet d’Eau, taking a ferry ride, visiting the Palais des Nations or the Patek Phillipe Museum, and checking out one of the flea markets—a favorite is the Plainpalais Flea Market.
