On this trip, you will be snowshoeing or cross-country skiing for 3 to 6 hours most days. Elevations are between 6,000 and 7300 feet, but with only 200- to 400-foot elevation gain. Most trails will be groomed from easy to moderate. No experience is required, but expect cold and wintry conditions on this active adventure.

  • Arrive in Bozeman, Montana

    Day 1

    Welcome to Bozeman, Montana a historic gateway town on the edge of forest and mountain wilderness. Upon arrival in Bozeman, take a complimentary shuttle to the hotel. Meet up with the group for orientation and a welcome dinner.

    Accommodation: Best Western Plus GranTree

    Ideally located just one mile from historic downtown Bozeman, the Best Western Plus GranTree Inn, features comfortable accommodations. The Inn also offers a complimentary airport and local shuttle, indoor pool and hot tub and an onsite restaurant and cocktail lounge.

  • Scenic Drive to Yellowstone's Paradise Valley & Mammoth Hot Springs

    Day 2

    Depart from Bozeman this morning and enjoy a scenic drive through Paradise Valley to Yellowstone National Park. Along the way, stop in the quaint town of Gardiner for an early lunch before heading to Mammoth Hot Springs. Step out in your snowshoes or cross-country skis this afternoon and experience the winter wonderland of the Upper Terrace Loop Trail. This spectacular route leads to views of the hot springs, travertine terraces, and the surrounding mountains. Relax at your historic hotel tonight.

    The historic Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel is just steps from Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. The spacious lobby features the signature Map Room, where you can relax with a drink, enjoy the musical delights of a live pianist, and view a large wooden map of the United States constructed of 15 different woods from nine countries. The historic accommodations are modest and authentic providing a true National Park Lodge experience. While there is no television or air conditioning at the property, internet is available.

  • Spot Wildlife in Lamar Valley & Take a Snow Coach to Old Faithful

    Day 3

    Start the day early with a trip to Lamar Valley, home to a large variety of the park's most charismatic creatures — wolves, bison, and elk! The valley's open meadows, framed by tree lines and mountains, provide habitat to support a large variety of animals. And with winter's white backdrop, they are much easier to spot. Board your private snow coach for a 4- to -5-hour interpretive journey from Mammoth Hot Springs to Old Faithful, where you'll spend the next two nights. The snow coach makes several stops along the way to share information on geothermal features and special features in the park.

    Accommodation: Old Faithful Snow Lodge

    Originally built in 1999, the Old Faithful Snow Lodge is one of the most modern hotels in Yellowstone National Park. Notably, it's been recognized as Travel & Leisure's Inn of the Month and earned the Cody Award for Western Design. Each room is equipped with western style furnishings, full bathrooms, coffee makers, and refrigerators. This accommodation is simple, efficient, modern, and full of Western lodge-style charm.

  • Old Faithful Cross-Country Skiing & Winter Nights Soundscape Experience

    Day 4

    Rise today for an exciting day of cross-country skiing in the Old Faithful area, at an elevation of 7,350 feet. With trails that begin right out the front door of the lodge, you'll be deep in the heart of a winter wonderland in moments! Enjoy skiing on mostly groomed trails, passing near thermal features where bison, elk and other animals take advantage of the warm ground. After an early dinner, hop into a heated snow coach with some hot chocolate to experience the sights and sounds of Yellowstone at night. This is a unique adventure for your senses!

    Accommodation: Old Faithful Snow Lodge

    Originally built in 1999, the Old Faithful Snow Lodge is one of the most modern hotels in Yellowstone National Park.   • Firehole River Snowshoe Trail & Journey to Chico Hot Springs

    Day 5

    This morning spend time in the woods on snowshoes! Snowshoe along the Firehole River and explore thermal basins with your interpretive guide. Hang up your snowshoes and board your private snow coach back to Mammoth Hot Springs. Next, transfer to Chico Hot Springs in the heart of Paradise Valley and enjoy a final farewell dinner with the group.

    Located in the heart of Paradise Valley, just north of Yellowstone National Park, the historic Chico Hot Springs Resort offers guests a wide range of experiences, from boutique hotel to luxury cabins, rustic lodging to spa retreats and an unforgettable hot springs pool. The resort's Dining Room stands out as one of the region's best restaurants, with much of the produce coming from Chico's own garden and all the baking done onsite.

Growing up in Chicago, Jack wasn't originally exposed to the great outdoors, but after his first Outward Bound course - white water rafting the Salmon River, his life changed forever. For the past seven years, Jack has had the great fortune of showing people from all over the world this great country - our national parks and diverse cities. Rachel began her guiding career in 1994, and has led trips throughout the US Southwest and the Canadian Rockies for the past 10 years. Who is this trip perfect for?

This adventure is perfect for people who want to cross-country ski and snowshoe at a moderate pace, with ample time to take in breathtaking views and enjoy the serenity.

Is previous snowshoe or cross-country ski experience required?

No, but you will enjoy the experience more if you are in good physical condition.

What wildlife can I expect to see?

Bison, elk, mule deer, coyote, bald eagles, trumpeter swans can be spotted throughout the year. If you are lucky, you also might catch sight of wolves and moose. Grizzly and black bears will be hibernating in winter, but each new season brings a wide variety of mammals and bird species on any given day.

How close can I get to wild animals in Yellowstone?

You should stay at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves and at least 25 yards away from other large mammals. Do not approach or feed park wildlife.
