Trek across the sweeping white dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, with sand so soft you can make the trip in your bare feet. This vast expanse of dunes looks like an archetypical desert, but the blue and green lagoons that spring up during the rainy season let you stop for a refreshing dip along the way. At the beginning and end of your trip, explore São Luis do Maranhão, also known as "Brazilian Jamaica." Founded by the French in 1612, this vibrant city is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This trip takes a new twist on hiking with the option to hike barefoot (or in socks) across soft white sand dunes, amongst fresh water lagoons.
Sleep in remote villages, with local families, in hammocks - a rare and wonderful, authentic adventure!
Our expert guides and trip leaders are truly the key to our trips' success. Many are locals who live in-country year-round; others have made it their second home—all are passionate, enthusiastic and endlessly knowledgeable. Meet a few of the guides that might be on your trip.
Hiking between three and seven miles a day, barefoot (or in socks) on the white sand dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.
Sleep on hammocks in private homes during your trek, with stays at the Grand Hotel São Luis on either end. Stay in lodges at Atins and Santo Amaro as well.
Weather is tolerable, but hot year round. In May, it can be humid with temperatures from 78°F-91°F. In September it's dry with temperatures from 86°F-95°F.
You will sleep 3 nights in hammocks, and 5 nights in hotels or Pousadas. The hammocks are actual cloth hammocks, with little to no back support. They will hang just above the sand, under a sun/rain shelter. Sand flies make sleeping on the ground unpleasant. If you have a back condition, this might not be the best trip option for you.
On Day 3, you will have to pack only the essentials as luggage will be carried by mules. You will have access to your main luggage in Santo Amaro.
Hikes will range from 4 - 7 hours, with stops along the way. We encourage guests to bring socks and/or water sandals to avoid hot feet along the way.
This trek requires physical endurance and stamina. You should be in good health and physical condition to join this trip.
On this trip we will have limited access to a variety of food. Please let us know in advance of your dietary restrictions in order to accommodate your diet.
