Itinerary
Arrive in Quito
Day 1
Welcome to Quito, Ecuador’s beautiful capital high in the Andes. An MT Sobek representative will meet you outside customs and transfer you to your comfortable hotel in the lively La Floresta neighborhood, just minutes from the city’s historic center. Settle in after your flight and enjoy the hotel’s pool and spa, or step out to begin exploring Quito at your own pace. Dinner is on your own tonight, giving you time to relax before meeting your guide and fellow travelers the next morning.
Accommodation: Swissotel-Quito, Ecuador
Transportation: 1-hour private transfer
Follow Trails in Cotopaxi National Park
Day 2
After meeting your fellow adventurers and guide, head out on a full-day trip to Cotopaxi National Park. This 82,520-acre ecological sanctuary protects Cotopaxi volcano, one of Ecuador’s most iconic mountains. With its perfectly conical shape and extensive ice cap, the 19,324-foot peak is easily identifiable, and it ranks among the highest active volcanoes on the planet. Hike around the park’s stunning Limpiopungo Lake, taking in exquisite views of Cotopaxi and nearby Rumiñahui as you keep an eye out for Andean foxes, pintail ducks, and majestic Andean condors. Enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant, savoring volcano views, before returning to Quito in the afternoon. Later, gather for an evening briefing about the upcoming Galapagos portion of your adventure, followed by a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
Accommodation: Swissotel-Quito, Ecuador
Activity: 2 hours walking with optional extensions

Fly to the Galapagos Islands & Kayak Villamil Bay
Day 3
Leave the Andes behind this morning as you fly west to the Galapagos Islands. After landing on Baltra, connect by local flight to Isabela, the archipelago’s largest and wildest island. Formed by six volcanoes and home to nearly 60 percent of the Galapagos’ flora and fauna, Isabela feels wonderfully remote from the start, with lava landscapes, sheltered bays, and remarkable wildlife waiting just beyond your hotel. This afternoon, kayak Villamil Bay, within walking distance of the hotel. Small islets dot the clear coastal waters, where sea lions, blue-footed boobies, and Galapagos penguins are often seen. You may also spend time snorkeling with sea turtles, reef sharks, and other marine life before returning to your boutique beachfront hotel.
Accommodation: Casa de Marita-Puerto Villamil, Isabela Island

Snorkel at Los Tuneles & See Giant Tortoises
Day 4
Set out on a motorboat ride to Los Tuneles, a marine paradise where ancient lava flows met the surf to form natural arches, tubes, and bridges. Spend your morning snorkeling among an incredible array of marine life, including parrotfish, green sea turtles, rays, and white-tipped reef sharks. This is an unforgettable opportunity to discover the diversity of the islands’ underwater world. After lunch, return to your hotel to prepare for your afternoon activity: a hike along the wetlands of Puerto Villamil and a visit to the giant tortoise breeding center, where you’ll learn about Galapagos National Park’s successful efforts to raise tortoises in captivity for later release into the wild. Return to town via the wetlands, scoping out flamingos, herons, and shorebirds as you go.

Hike Sierra Negra Volcano
Day 5
Today you'll hike one of the most active volcanoes in the Galapagos: Sierra Negra, a surreal landscape of steaming fumaroles and otherworldly lava fields. Trek two hours up a gradual incline to the edge of its massive crater, enjoying spectacular views of the Pacific and the surrounding archipelago as you go. Keep an eye out for endemic Galapagos hawks and vermilion flycatchers as you continue along the crater to the adjoining Volcan Chico. Here you'll get a close-up look at active steam vents and uniquely shaped lava formations while taking in panoramic Galapagos vistas. Afterward, transfer back to Puerto Villamil. The rest of the day is yours to swim at the beach, snorkel in a sheltered cove with tropical fish and sea lions (and the occasional penguin), or enjoy a walk on the nearby two-mile coral-sand beach, which starts in town.

Hike & Kayak on Santa Cruz Island
Day 6
An early swim or nature walk rounds out your time on Isabela before your transfer to Puerto Villamil airport for the short flight to Baltra. From here, continue to Santa Cruz Island and into the lush highlands, stopping at Los Gemelos, two massive sinkholes surrounded by cloud forest filled with ferns, mosses, and lichens. Look for endemic birds such as Darwin’s finches and flycatchers, as well as highland flora not found in the lowlands. Continue to El Chato Reserve, where giant tortoises roam among freshwater ponds and grassy highland meadows. Explore a lava tunnel and enjoy lunch in the highlands before driving to Puerto Ayora, the largest settlement in the Galapagos. This afternoon includes a kayaking experience at Divine Bay, a wildlife-rich cove where calm turquoise water, black basalt cliffs, mangroves, and small islets set the scene for sightings of sea lions, sea turtles, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, pelicans, herons, and lava gulls.

See Frigatebirds & Snorkel at North Seymour Island
Day 7
Transfer to the Itabaca Channel and step aboard a local speedboat for a 30-minute journey in calm waters to North Seymour Island, a small isle north of Baltra that teems with wildlife. It’s one of the best spots in the Galapagos to watch male frigatebirds perform their elaborate red-pouch mating rituals, alongside blue-footed boobies, sea lions, land and marine iguanas, and the archipelago’s two endemic gull species. After exploring the island on foot, snorkel its surrounding clear waters in search of tropical fish, sea turtles, and reef sharks. Lunch onboard your speedboat before heading to Bachas Beach for a swim and more wildlife viewing. Enjoy a special farewell dinner this evening.

FAQs
MT Sobek brings over 55 years of expertise to the "Enchanted Islands," having led one of the first North American charters here in 1970. This active land-based journey in the Galapagos features stays at boutique coastal properties, with comfortable air travel between Baltra and Isabela Island to avoid the often choppy 2-hour passage by local speedboat. Highlights include two of the best wildlife experiences by local dayboat—spectacular snorkeling amid the natural lava tubes and bridges at Los Tuneles, and a nature walk and snorkeling at North Seymour Island, the best location to see male frigatebirds puffing up their red pouch to attract breeding females. Both involve short 30- to 60-minute navigations each way in calm waters, with chances to spot dolphins and sea birds during the journey.
Legacy of Expertise: We were among the first companies to bring visitors to the Galapagos in 1970 and have spent decades refining our award-winning Galapagos adventures. We have longstanding relationships with our expert trip leaders, who are all certified Level III Galapagos Naturalist Guides—the highest level awarded by the Galapagos National Park. These guides have demonstrated their Galapagos expertise by passing the requisite Naturalist course and holding a degree in a related field, such as biology, ecology, or tourism. These guides must be also fluent in at least three languages.
Boutique Coastal Lodges: Stay at a beachfront lodge on the island of Isabela, with white sands and turquoise waters just outside your door, and at a boutique lodge close to the sea on Santa Cruz, instead of in the highlands which are often shrouded in fog. At both, enjoy free time to stroll in the local town and experience some of the local culture.
Galapagos Wildlife: This itinerary visits the islands of Isabela, Santa Cruz, and North Seymour. You’ll see Galapagos penguins, blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, land and marine iguanas, sea turtles, sea lions, a variety of giant tortoises, reef sharks, and more.
Active Exploration: Every departure is led by our dedicated and exceptional MT Sobek trip leader who accompanies you during daily excursions, including hiking, snorkeling, and kayaking in hidden coves. Many activities also include an additional local guide.
The Galapagos Islands are a year-round destination, with something to see and do every month. Wetsuits are provided for each snorkeling experience on this adventure.
December to May: Expect warmer daytime temperatures between 76 and 88°F and water temperatures in the upper 70s°F, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. You might not even need a wetsuit, especially January to March!
June to November: Daytime temperatures range from 66 to 79°F with cooler waters (65 to 72°F), brought by the Humboldt Current, with rich feeding grounds for abundant marine life. Wetsuits are recommended for comfortable snorkeling and swimming.
Wildlife highlights on this itinerary: Galapagos penguins, blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, land and marine iguanas, sea turtles, sea lions, a variety of giant tortoises, reef sharks, and more.
This adventure features full days of active exploration. While the physical demands are not extreme, the days are full with a variety of activity options, including swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking.
Varied Trail Conditions: Daily easy-to-moderate walks of one to two hours take you over sandy, rocky surfaces that require good balance. Occasionally, more challenging terrain includes fields of dramatic broken lava rock, and there is one moderate level hike of 10 miles with gradual elevation change of 900 feet up and down.
Water Activities: Snorkeling and kayaking excursions require participants to be comfortable in deep water. Wetsuits provide buoyancy and life jackets are available.
The trip starts and ends in Quito, Ecuador.
You should fly into and out of Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito, Ecuador (UIO).
Once your booking is confirmed, please consult your Adventure Coordinator regarding specific flight times to ensure they align with our scheduled transfers.
Arrival: Please arrive in Quito, Ecuador (UIO) anytime on Day 1.
Departure: You can schedule your departing flight from Quito, Ecuador (UIO) after 10:00 pm on Day 8 or anytime on Day 9. Your hotel on the night of Day 8 is included and serves as either a comfortable rest stop before a late-night flight or a full night’s rest before departing the following day. The hotel is located just five minutes from the terminal and provides a complimentary 24/7 airport shuttle, which you can easily coordinate at the front desk.
We take care of the logistics by reserving your flights to and from the Galapagos Islands (and between Baltra and Isabela Island) on your behalf, and this cost will be reflected on your trip invoice. You will receive additional details regarding these flights during your orientation. If you are traveling with a child aged 11 or younger, please provide your Adventure Coordinator with a clear copy or photo of the child's passport at least 95 days before departure. Once received, we will adjust your invoice to reflect the child airfare rate for the internal Galapagos flights.
If you arrive early or stay late to explore more of Quito, we recommend staying in the city center at our group hotel, Swissotel Quito, located in the Floresta neighborhood. For those staying late near the airport or requiring a day room on Day 11, the Wyndham Quito Airport is an excellent choice as it is located just five minutes from the terminal. Your Adventure Coordinator is happy to book these extra nights for you.
Note that the drive from Quito airport to the city center takes approximately one hour. For those who are staying in the city center post-tour, we can arrange a private transfer from Quito airport to your hotel at additional cost.
A valid passport is required to enter Ecuador. Ecuador requires that passports be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and contain at least one blank page for entry stamps. US citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. Non-US citizens should consult their local embassy or consulate to confirm current entry requirements.
If a minor is not accompanied by all parents or legal guardians, we strongly urge the traveling guardian to carry a notarized document from all non-traveling guardians granting approval for the minor to travel. Air carriers and local authorities do request this documentation from time to time. Similarly, if a minor is traveling with a sole parent or guardian, we recommend carrying notarized documentation confirming that status to ensure a smooth journey.
