Arrive in Sarajevo, the cultural heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the afternoon, after settling into your hotel, set out on a walking tour of Stari Grad (Old Town) for a glimpse into the city’s turbulent past that spanned empires—from the Ottoman Turks to the Austro-Hungarians. More recently, the city was host to the 1984 Winter Olympics and then made the news in the 1990s during the siege by Serb forces. Tour the ancient Ottoman quarter called Bascarsija, with its stone-flagged alleys and red-roofed houses sitting amongst minarets, as well as major historical and cultural sites.

Hike to the concrete remains of the 1984 Olympic bobsled run, now an atmospheric canvas for local graffiti artists. Climb through pine and spruce forest to a mountain hut named for Olympic skier Jure Franko and a panorama of Sarajevo and the Dinaric Alps. Return to the valley for a sobering look at the Sarajevo Tunnel, a lifeline to the blockaded city during the Bosnian War siege. Return to the city and an afternoon exploring more of its Old Town.

FAQs

What makes MT Sobek's Balkans Best of Via Dinarica trip unique?

This trip is a high-impact, 13-day expedition through the "Green Heart" of the Balkans. This journey on the southern Via Dinarica spans four countries—Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, and Albania—perfectly balancing challenging hikes and breathtaking scenery with deep historical immersion and authentic local traditions.

The "Peak" Experiences
Mt. Maglic (Bosnia & Herzegovina): A demanding 9-hour scramble to the country’s highest point (7,828'), featuring cable-assisted sections and a descent to the emerald Trnovacko Lake.

Bobotov Kuk (Montenegro): A climb to the highest peak in the Durmitor massif (8,277'), offering views that stretch to the Adriatic Sea on clear days (rare, however, the peaks themselves are stunning).

Valbona Pass (Albania): A classic “Accursed Mountains” trek, crossing a high-altitude mule trail to connect the remote valleys of Theth and Valbona.

Cultural and Historical Immersion
Sarajevo & Mostar: Deep dives into Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian history, including a sobering "recent history" visit to the Sarajevo War Tunnel and the UNESCO-listed Stari Most (Old Bridge).

Cultural Exploration: Thriving European Capitals Sarajevo and Tirana with histories colored by conflict juxtaposed with remote, very traditional Lukomir, Theth, and Valbona where little has changed over the centuries.

Religious Heritage: A visit to the 14th-century Decan Monastery in Kosovo, famous for its 1,000+ original Byzantine frescoes.

Diverse Adventure Landscapes
Tara River Canyon: A break from hiking to raft (float) the "Colorado of the East" - the deepest river canyon in Europe - featuring Class II rapids. Super-blue water.

Olympic Legacy: Hiking through the abandoned 1984 Olympic bobsled tracks on Trebevic mountain, now a canvas for local street art.

Herzegovina Wine Country: A transition from the mountains to the Mediterranean climate of the south for wine tasting and a visit to a 16th-century Dervish monastery.

When is the best time to hike the southern Via Dinarica?

The ideal window is mid-June to late September. High-alpine passes in the Accursed Mountains (Albania/Kosovo) and on Maglic (Bosnia) can remain snow-bound until early June. July and August are the warmest but also bring afternoon thunderstorms.

Late June to Early July: The landscape is at its most vibrant. Wildflowers are in full bloom, and glacial lakes are stunning. Be prepared for lingering snow patches on north-facing slopes and high passes like Valbona.

July and August: While these are the driest months, temperatures rise and the air becomes dry, especially in the karst limestone sections of Bosnia and Kosovo.

September: Often considered the gold standard for hiking. The summer heat breaks, the air is the clearest for panoramic views, and the autumn colors begin to turn the beech forests of Sutjeska National Park golden.

What is the group size for this trip?
The typical group size for this trip is between 5 and 16 guests, creating an experience that feels personal, relaxed, and thoughtfully paced. Small group travel allows us to share moments that make a journey truly memorable.
What makes this a Level 4 trip?

You will encounter steep limestone ridges, deep glacial valleys, and technical karst terrain that is uneven and sharp. Expect significant elevation gains, such as the ascent of Maglic (7,828').

Technical Terrain: The ascent of Maglic involves a demanding scramble to the summit that features cable-assisted sections for safety on rugged mountainous terrain. Trails often consist of steep, rocky paths, such as the climb to Bobotov Kuk or the steep ascent through beech woods toward Valbona Pass.

Elevation and Distance: Expect full days of hiking with significant elevation gains and multiple summits. The most challenging is Maglic (Bosnia and Herzegovina), a 9-hour, 9-mile hike involving 4,250 feet of elevation gain and 4,210 feet of loss to reach the summit at 7,828 feet. Distances vary from 4 to 10+ miles in a day, interspersed with cultural experiences on rest days.

Endurance: The trip requires the stamina for consecutive days of 5 to 9 hours of hiking in remote alpine environments.

Will the itinerary change?
We plan the itinerary carefully, but adjustments may be needed due to weather, trail conditions, or other factors. MT Sobek and our guides make thoughtful decisions when needed in real time to keep the experience safe and enjoyable, and any significant changes will be communicated as early and as clearly as possible.
What is the minimum age for this trip?
The standard minimum age for this trip is 18 but check out our private trip options for families and groups with younger guests.
