Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure

Start: Anchorage, Alaska  End: Fairbanks, Alaska

Itinerary

  • Arrive in Anchorage & Hike the Matanuska Glacier

    Day 1

Kick off your trip this morning in Anchorage, Alaska, where after introductions and a trip orientation, you'll set out on your first adventure: the massive Matanuska Glacier. At 27 miles long and 4 miles wide, the icy behemoth offers an impressive introduction to just one of more than 100,000 glaciers in the state. Strap on a helmet and crampons and head out on an up-close exploration of the glacier's ancient caves and crevasses. Later this afternoon, transfer to your remote home-away-from-home, a comfortable lodge set amongst the stunning Talkeetna and Chugach Mountain Ranges.

    Accommodation: Majestic Valley Wilderness Lodge

Activity: 2-4 miles/3 hours hiking on icy terrain

    Transportation: 2-hour private van transfer

    Meals: Lunch, Dinner

  • Kayak Valdez Glacier Lake & Explore Valdez

    Day 2

Today's journey takes you to Valdez, the gateway to stunning Prince William Sound. Along the way, stop to stretch your legs and take in spectacular panoramas of the range while learning more about America's largest national park at the Wrangell-St. Elias Visitor Center. Back on the historic Richardson Highway, enjoy non-stop views of the Chugach Mountains as you travel over Thompson Pass, the snowiest location in Alaska. Just before reaching Valdez, stop to kayak in the cool waters of Valdez Glacier Lake. Formed by the massive runoff of the 20-mile Valdez Glacier, the lake sits at its terminus and it's here you'll kayak through a variety of icebergs, bergy bits, growlers, and ice caves. This evening, enjoy a casual dinner in the heart of Valdez before exploring the town on your own or independently hiking one of the area's great local trails.

Please note that depending on ice levels on Valdez Glacier Lake, early-season departures may kayak an alternate route through the tidal flats of a wildlife estuary.

    Accommodation: Totem Hotel and Suites

    Activity: 2-3 hours kayaking

    Transportation: 3-hour private van transfer

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Take a Wildlife & Glacier Cruise on Prince William Sound

    Day 3

Early this morning, set out on a spectacular boat tour of one of the most biodiverse regions in Alaska. At over 10,000 square miles, Prince William Sound is a treasure trove of glistening fjords, secluded islands, and massive glaciers. Look for the abundant wildlife that inhabits this area, including playful seals and otters, breaching orcas and humpback whales, porpoises, and an assortment of birdlife from puffins to kittiwakes. The surrounding forests and shorelines are also home to bears, moose, and smaller mammals. Keep your camera out and ready! Then, set off on a road trip to the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula, and your accommodations in Homer, Alaska.

    Accommodation: The Ocean Shores Resort

    Activity: 7-hour small boat cruise

    Transportation: 3.5-hour private van transfer

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Paddle Around Yukon Island National Historic Landmark

    Day 4

Sitting at the outlet of Kachemak Bay, Ni'qa (Yukon Island) was a critical access point for Indigenous communities in the region and later to the resources beyond. The island is made up of numerous archeological sites, which extend back to approximately 2500 BC. Access to the waters surrounding the island is limited and today, you'll be fortunate enough to be one of the few who can explore along the shoreline. As you circumnavigate the island it's easy to see how this approximately one-mile-wide by one-mile-long island played such a pivotal role to the pre-historic Athabascan, Yupik, and Aleut people. The island itself is heavily wooded, providing protected habitat for several marine and mammal species. After an amazing day on the water, take the evening to explore Homer on your own.

    Accommodation: The Ocean Shores Resort

    Activity: 4 hours kayaking

Transportation: 2-hour boat transfer, 30-minute private van transfer

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

  • Hike Historic Crow Pass Along the Iditarod Trail

    Day 5

Depart Homer this morning for a scenic drive in preparation for the second leg of your journey into Alaska’s spectacular and rugged interior. Along the way, detour to one of the most impressive trails in the Chugach Mountains: Crow Pass. Following a short section of the famed 1,150-mile Iditarod Trail, the Crow Pass trail meanders through a picturesque valley of flowers, waterfalls, outstanding views, and the remnants of Alaska’s Gold Rush past. Stretch your legs on the trail before spending time at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, which has served as a critical sanctuary and educational complex for over 30 years. Spend this evening in Anchorage, resting up for tomorrow’s journey to Talkeetna.

    Accommodation: Aspen Suites Hotel Anchorage

Activity: 3-5 miles hiking/2-3 hours with 2,000' elevation gain and loss

    Transportation: 4-hour private van transfer

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Ride the Wilderness Express Train to Talkeetna

    Day 6

Your journey aboard the Wilderness Express, in a private, glass-domed car with premier service, is the perfect introduction to the beauty and diversity of interior Alaska. As you travel up the Knik Arm and away from the tidal waters of Alaska's glorious coast, enter the enchanting and rugged terrain of the state's most famous mountain range. Along the way, your on-board guide will provide informative details on the natural and human history of the region. Upon arrival in Talkeetna, explore the charming mountain town before a hike around scenic Talkeetna Lakes. Wrap up the day with dinner and beer tasting at one of the region's most beloved breweries.

    Accommodation: Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge-Talkeetna, Alaska

Activity: 5 miles/3 hours hiking with minimal elevation gain and loss

    Transportation: 3-hour train ride

    Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

  • Hike Curry Ridge for Jaw-Dropping Alaska Range Views

    Day 7

Today, you'll hike south of Denali National Park in a region considered the perfect spot to view the Alaska Range: Curry Ridge in Denali State Park. The trail climbs gradually through a dense forest of fern, bunchberry, dogwood, and deciduous trees, before breaking out of the trees and onto a ridge boasting 360-degree views of the Alaska and Talkeetna ranges. Enjoy a picnic lunch amidst the alpine tundra, soaking up your beautiful surroundings. After your hike, transfer to Denali National Park and your accommodation, located just outside the park entrance in a quiet spruce forest, away from the crowds. Enjoy dinner as a group, as your MT Sobek guide offers recommendations for the next day, which is spent independently.

Activity: 6.5 miles/3-4 hours hiking with 1,023' elevation gain and loss

    Transportation: 2.5-hour private van transfer

  • Explore Denali National Park

    Day 8

Today is yours for adventure in Denali National Park! In the days prior to your arrival in the park, your expert MT Sobek guide will talk through the variety of options to choose from and provide you with some details on how to book your adventure. Whether you choose to ride a park bus to a trailhead and spend the day hiking, take a helicopter tour, visit the National Park Service's sled dog kennel, ride a zipline, raft down the Nenana River Gorge, or hang out at the park's visitor center, a day exploring Denali National Park is one you won't forget.

Your hike culminates with a well-earned farewell lunch at a local brewing company, where you can celebrate your adventures together with your group and guides before heading to Fairbanks, where you’ll bid farewell to new friends and the awe-inspiring state of Alaska.

Kick off your trip this morning in Anchorage, Alaska, where after introductions and a trip orientation, you\'ll set out on your first adventure: the massive Matanuska Glacier. At 27 miles long and 4 miles wide, the icy behemoth offers an impressive introduction to just one of more than 100,000 glaciers in the state. Strap on a helmet and crampons and head out on an up-close exploration of the glacier\'s ancient caves and crevasses. Later this afternoon, transfer to your remote home-away-from-home, a comfortable lodge set amongst the stunning Talkeetna and Chugach Mountain Ranges.

Today\'s journey takes you to Valdez, the gateway to stunning Prince William Sound. Along the way, stop to stretch your legs and take in spectacular panoramas of the range while learning more about America\'s largest national park at the Wrangell-St. Formed by the massive runoff of the 20-mile Valdez Glacier, the lake sits at its terminus and it\'s here you\'ll kayak through a variety of icebergs, bergy bits, growlers, and ice caves. This evening, enjoy a casual dinner in the heart of Valdez before exploring the town on your own or independently hiking one of the area\'s great local trails.

Please note that depending on ice levels on Valdez Glacier Lake, early-season departures may kayak an alternate route through the tidal flats of a wildlife estuary.

Sitting at the outlet of Kachemak Bay, Ni\'qa (Yukon Island) was a critical access point for Indigenous communities in the region and later to the resources beyond. The island is made up of numerous archeological sites, which extend back to approximately 2500 BC. Access to the waters surrounding the island is limited and today, you\'ll be fortunate enough to be one of the few who can explore along the shoreline. As you circumnavigate the island it\'s easy to see how this approximately one-mile-wide by one-mile-long island played such a pivotal role to the pre-historic Athabascan, Yupik, and Aleut people. The island itself is heavily wooded, providing protected habitat for several marine and mammal species. After an amazing day on the water, take the evening to explore Homer on your own.

FAQs

Trip Overview

What makes MT Sobek's Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure trip unique?

Since 1972, MT Sobek has led the way as an Alaska wilderness expert, and this thoughtfully paced expedition serves as the ultimate introduction to "The Last Frontier." From the glaciers of Prince William Sound to the summits of the Alaska Range, you will experience the state's wild magic through a perfect blend of kayaking, cruising, hiking, and iconic rail travel.

By Land, Sea, and Rail: Experience Alaska from every angle as you navigate by kayak, small boat, the iconic glass-domed Denali Star Train on the Alaska Railroad, and on foot through wild and scenic landscapes.

Legacy of Alaska Expertise: Since our first expeditions over five decades ago, MT Sobek has maintained a reputation as a pioneer in Alaska adventure travel, building deep connections across the state's most remote regions.

Glacier Exploration: Get up-close access to the 27-mile-long Matanuska Glacier and kayak through "bergy bits" and "growlers" at the terminus of the Valdez Glacier.

Wildlife Viewing: Journey through some of the most biodiverse regions in the world, seeking out breaching orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, and Alaska's "Big Five" in the shadow of 20,310-foot Denali.

Comfortable Lodges: Retreat each night to hand-picked, rustic lodges that reflect the remote spirit of Alaska, offering breathtaking views far from the crowds.

When is the best time to experience Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure?

This adventure is exclusively designed for the Alaskan summer, from June through August, when the "Land of the Midnight Sun" is at its most vibrant. During these months, the trails are accessible, the wildlife is active, and the long daylight hours allow for full immersion in the jaw-dropping scenery of the Chugach and Alaska Ranges.

June: June offers the longest days of the year and the best opportunity to see wildflowers in bloom across the tundra while mountain peaks remain capped with brilliant winter snow.

July: This peak window typically offers the warmest temperatures and the highest activity levels for marine wildlife, including whales and porpoises in Prince William Sound.

August: As summer winds down, berries ripen on the hillsides, attracting bears and other mammals, while the changing light begins to hint at the coming autumn.

What is the group size for this trip?

The typical group size for this trip is between 6 and 10 guests, creating an experience that feels personal, relaxed, and thoughtfully paced. Small group travel allows us to share moments that make a journey truly memorable, such as unexpected wildlife sightings.

What is the minimum age for this trip?

The standard minimum age for this trip is 18. This itinerary is designed with adult travelers in mind, based on daily activity levels, accommodations, and overall group experience. Families or groups with younger children should check out our private departures . Younger children may be considered for private trips following a screening process with our team.

What makes this a Level 2 trip?

A Level 2 rating indicates a moderate level of challenge with a diverse range of activities—from hiking on ancient glacial ice to paddling through moving tidal waters. You don’t need any previous kayaking, hiking, or other experience, but should be in generally fit condition.

Varied Terrain: You will hike routes with up to 2,700 feet elevation gain/loss over varied terrain including mud, rocks, gravel, snow, ice, on both established and unestablished trails.

Paddling: Kayaking on Valdez Glacier Lake and Kachemak Bay typically lasts two to four hours, requiring good core strength and upper-body stamina.

The Weather Factor: While summers are generally mild, you must be prepared for sun, rain, or wind, as weather conditions in Alaska can shift rapidly.

Will the itinerary change?
We plan the itinerary carefully, but adjustments may be needed due to weather, trail conditions, or other factors. MT Sobek and our guides make thoughtful decisions when needed in real time to keep the experience safe and enjoyable, and any significant changes will be communicated as early and as clearly as possible. In Alaska, flexibility is a key part of the adventure; for instance, if ice levels on Valdez Glacier Lake are too high, we may kayak a beautiful alternate route through a wildlife estuary.

Arriving and Departing

Where does the trip start and end?
The trip starts in Anchorage, Alaska, and ends in Fairbanks, Alaska.
What airport should I fly into and out of?
You should fly into Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) and depart from Fairbanks International Airport (FAI).
When should I book my flights?
Once your reservation with MT Sobek is finalized, we will notify you of your trip's status. After your departure is confirmed to operate, flights and travel arrangements may be purchased. While we can often confirm departures in advance, some decisions may be finalized closer to final payment. Always check with your Adventure Coordinator before purchasing non-refundable airfare.
When should I arrive and depart?

Please consult with your Adventure Coordinator prior to booking flights to ensure your departure is confirmed. Plan to arrive in Anchorage at least one day early to adjust to the time zone and ensure you are on time for the morning orientation on Day 1.

Arrival: Arrive at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) no later than 10:00 am on Day 1 for the group meeting at the Crowne Plaza Anchorage-Midtown located at 109 W International Airport Road.

Departure: Depart from Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) after 8:00 pm on Day 9.

Who will I meet on Day 1, and where?
You will meet your MT Sobek guide and fellow travelers at 10:00 am in the lobby of the Crowne Plaza Anchorage-Midtown. Begin with a group orientation and introductions, then set out for your first adventure at the Matanuska Glacier.
What hotels do you recommend if I arrive early or stay late?

On the final day, there is a group transfer to Fairbanks International Airport (FAI) with an estimated arrival time between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm. You also have the option to be transferred to Pike's Waterfront Lodge or the La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Fairbanks Airport , both of which offer convenient airport transfers.

Can MT Sobek help arrange a private transfer?
No, private transfers are not arranged by MT Sobek for this itinerary. We recommend using the included group transportation during the trip and local taxis or the hotel shuttle for your arrival in Anchorage.
How much time will we spend in vehicles during the trip?
While this trip is focused on active exploration, Alaska's vast size requires some travel to reach its most spectacular corners. You can expect daily vehicle transfers typically ranging from two to four hours. These drives are often scenic highlights themselves, such as the journey over Thompson Pass on the historic Richardson Highway.
Are there any especially long travel days?
Most transfers are kept under three hours to maximize your time on the trail or water. Day 5 involves a four-hour drive from Homer to Anchorage, which is balanced with a scenic hike at Crow Pass and a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

Fitness, Terrain and Trail Expectations

How difficult is the activity on Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure?

This adventure requires a good base of fitness for active days that blend hiking and paddling. You should be comfortable being on your feet for three to seven hours daily and capable of paddling for several hours in variable currents.

Varied Terrain: Guests should be capable of hiking up to six miles with up to 2,700 feet elevation gain/loss over varied terrain including mud, rocks, gravel, snow, ice, and both established and unestablished trails.

Paddling: Guests should be prepared to kayak up to four hours in a variety of water conditions including cold water, minor waves, variable currents, and tides.

Wildlife and Glacier Cruise: For your seven-hour cruise exploration of Prince William Sound, those prone to motion sickness should bring preventatives. Travel by water cannot be avoided on this day.

Do I need prior experience?
No prior experience is required, as our expert guides provide all necessary instructions and safety briefings. However, you should have a sense of adventure and the agility to get in and out of a kayak along with the balance to hike on uneven, slippery, or rocky surfaces.
How should I train or prepare for Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure?

We recommend starting a consistent training regimen at least several months before your departure to build balance, stamina, and strength. Focus on walking, hiking, or aerobic activities several times a week to ensure you can enjoy back-to-back active days in the wilderness.

Cardio Fitness: Engage in 30 to 60 minutes of cardio—such as brisk walking or hiking—at least once a week.

Hiking Consistency: Aim for a one- to two-mile walk or hike weekly, gradually increasing your distance closer to five to six miles as the trip approaches. Look for hikes with elevation gain and loss to help build strength and stamina.

Upper Body Strength: For kayaking, incorporate exercises that strengthen your core, shoulders, and back to prepare for three to four hours of sustained paddling with breaks.

Is there exposure or technical terrain on Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure?
There is no technical climbing, but you will encounter unique terrain like the Matanuska Glacier, where you will use crampons and helmets to explore crevasses and caves. Some trails on this trip are uneven, rocky, and moderately steep, and can be muddy or slippery in wet conditions. Your guides manage the route, safety, and pacing carefully.
What is the kayaking like on the trip?
The kayaking on this adventure offers a close-up look at Alaska's diverse aquatic landscapes, from glacial lakes to biologically rich bays. On Valdez Glacier Lake, you will paddle through the cool runoff at the terminus of the Valdez Glacier, navigating a variety of icebergs, "bergy bits," "growlers," and ice caves. On Kachemak Bay and Yukon Island, you will explore the shoreline and circumnavigate Yukon Island, a National Historic Landmark, where you can see how the island provided critical access for prehistoric Indigenous communities. We use tandem kayaks with spray skirts on all our paddling excursions.

It is possible to opt out of the kayaking excursions to relax or explore Valdez or Homer on your own. Alternative guided activities are not provided for those opting out of the kayaking excursions on this trip.
What can I expect on the ice trek?
The ice trek on the Matanuska Glacier offers an immersive and up-close introduction to one of Alaska's most impressive icy behemoths. Spanning 27 miles long and 4 miles wide, this massive glacier provides a prehistoric landscape for exploration. The trek typically covers two to four miles and lasts approximately three hours.

To ensure safety on the ice, MT Sobek provides and requires the use of helmets, crampons, and boots. And you will be accompanied by an expert naturalist guide who provides rich context and helps navigate the icy terrain.

It is possible to opt out of this activity and relax at the yurt, but no alternative guided activities can be provided.
Can I move at my own pace?
The group hikes and paddles together with regular breaks. Guides help manage pacing so everyone can travel comfortably while maintaining safety and group cohesion. This collaborative approach allows your naturalist guides to share rich context about the waterways, boreal forests, and sub-alpine tundra as you pass through them.
What if I want to skip a day?
It is possible to opt out of the activities on Day 4 in Homer or Day 8 in Denali National Park, where you can relax at the lodge or explore the local town independently. Please note that on point-to-point travel days, you will need to move with the group.

It is possible to opt out of the ice trek and relax at the yurt, or to opt out of either kayaking excursion and explore Valdez or Homer, but no alternative guided activities can be provided.
How much free time will I have?

Your days are quite active and full, but evenings generally offer time to unwind at the lodge and enjoy a hearty meal. You will have significant independent time on Day 8 in Denali National Park to choose your own adventure—whether that’s a helicopter tour, a fishing excursion, visiting the sled dog kennels, or simply relaxing. In the days prior to your arrival in the park, your expert MT Sobek guide will talk through the variety of options to choose from and provide you with some details on how to book your adventure and associated costs (these are not included in the trip price). For guests wishing to book a Denali National Park bus tour, your guide will work with you to ensure this is arranged by Day 2.

Accommodations and Meals

What should I expect from accommodations on this trip?

Accommodations are hand-picked to showcase the unique and remote landscapes of Alaska. You can expect a mix of modern hotels and rustic wilderness lodges. While clean and charming, some properties are remote and may feel a bit more modest or basic compared to city hotels. They are chosen specifically for their incredible views, locations, and authentic character.

Will I have access to Wi-Fi and electricity?
Yes, all accommodations have access to electricity for charging devices. Most offer free Wi-Fi, which is most reliable in the main common area of the hotel/lodge, with spottier or unreliable Wi-Fi in guest rooms. On Nights 7 and 8, Wi-Fi can be particularly slow and spotty at remote Denali National Park.
What meals are included?
The trip includes most breakfasts, lunches, and dinners as noted in the itinerary. You will have the opportunity to explore restaurants independently on Day 4, when dinner is on your own in Homer. Day 6 includes breakfast and dinner only, as you will be traveling aboard the Wilderness Express train and exploring the charming mountain town of Talkeetna, where lunch is on your own. Day 8 is a dedicated day for independent adventure in Denali National Park, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are not included, allowing you to choose your own dining experiences in Denali Village during your free time. Finally, Day 9 concludes with a celebratory farewell lunch, and dinner is not included as guests depart from Fairbanks.
What is the food like on Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure?
Meals on this trip are hearty, casual, and well suited to active days in Alaska. Depending on the day, breakfasts may range from a continental buffet to a sit-down meal ordered from the menu. Lunches are usually boxed or picnic-style, enjoyed during daily activities, and the journey concludes with a celebratory farewell lunch at 49th State Brewing. Most dinners are sit-down meals, where you can order from a menu and may find regional favorites such as fresh seafood, local fish, burgers, soups, and other classic Alaska lodge or restaurant fare. Alcohol is not included. Because this trip travels through remote parts of Alaska, dining options and access to certain ingredients may be more limited than in larger cities.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes, we can accommodate many common restrictions like vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets on this trip with advance notice. Let us know about your dietary restrictions and food allergies as soon as possible, so we can coordinate with guides, hotels, and restaurants. Please also list these on your Participant Information Form. Due to the remote nature of the areas we visit, options may be more limited.

Are single rooms available?

Yes, a limited number of single rooms are available on this trip. About a third of our travelers go solo, and single room inventory often books up quickly! You can find more information on solo traveler options here .

Are triple rooms available?
Triple rooms are not offered on this trip to ensure all accommodations meet MT Sobek standards for your comfort.

Packing and Gear

What should I pack for Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure?
The key to Alaskan comfort is layering. You will need high-quality rain protection (jacket and pants), synthetic or wool base layers, and a warm fleece or down jacket. Other essentials include a reusable 1-liter water bottle, full-fingered paddling gloves, sun protection, insect repellent, and a head net. A detailed packing list will be provided.
Do I need trekking poles or specialty gear?
MT Sobek provides the specialized technical gear needed for your activities, including crampons, helmets, and boots for the glacier trek. For water-based adventures, we provide PFDs and rainsuits for the Valdez Glacier kayaking, as well as PFDs, spray skirts, rainsuits, and rubber boots for the Yukon Island kayaking. We also provide trekking poles for your use on the trails.
What size daypack should I bring?
A 25- to 35-liter daypack with a rain cover is ideal. It should be large enough to carry your daily essentials: rain gear, a warm layer, water, personal items, sunscreen, and your provided lunch.
Can I bring more than one bag?
Guests should plan to bring one main piece of luggage and a daypack. Because vehicle space is limited, packing efficiently is important. On this itinerary, luggage transfer is included, meaning your bags are moved from hotel to hotel while you explore—so you can focus on the activity, not your gear. We recommend a soft-sided wheeled duffel or a standard suitcase for your main bag. Hard-sided suitcases are acceptable, but soft-sided luggage is preferred for security during transport.
Are there any seasonally required items?

Regardless of when you travel, you must be prepared for the "four seasons in one day" reality of Alaska. Early June and September departures may encounter cooler temperatures in the 40sF, making extra warm base layers and fleece hat and gloves essential. Insect repellent and a head net are key in summer when bugs are active.

What kind of footwear should I bring for this trip?
You will need sturdy, medium-weight, waterproof hiking boots or trail shoes. Be sure to completely break in your boots before the trip to prevent blisters.
Will I have access to laundry during the trip?
Most accommodations on this adventure do not have laundry facilities. We recommend packing enough clothing for the duration or bringing a sink stopper and travel detergent for hand-washing quick-drying items.
Should I bring a personal medical kit?
Yes, we recommend bringing a small kit with personal basics like blister care, bandages, lip protection with SPF, motion sickness preventatives if you get seasick easily, and any preferred over-the-counter pain relievers.

On-the-Ground Travel Tips

What is the weather like on Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure by month?

Alaskan summer weather is famously unpredictable. While you can expect mild temperatures, you must be prepared for sun, rain, and wind—often all on the same day. Dressing in layers is the only way to stay comfortable as you move between coastal fjords and interior mountains.

Typical Summer Range: Temperatures generally fluctuate between the 40s and 60s°F, though they can occasionally climb higher in mid-summer or drop lower during early June and late August.

The Rain Factor: It rains every month of the summer in Alaska; high-quality waterproof gear is essential, including a jacket and pants. You may also want to have a waterproof hat.

What currency should I bring?
Alaska uses US dollars. Credit cards are widely accepted in towns like Anchorage, Homer, and Fairbanks, but carrying some cash is helpful for small personal purchases or optional gratuities. ATMs are available in Anchorage.
Will I have cell service?
Cell service is generally good in Anchorage, Valdez, and Homer. However, it will be unreliable or completely unavailable once you enter the remote regions near Denali on Nights 7 and 8. We recommend downloading any maps or documents for offline use.
Will I need electrical adapters or a voltage converter?

The United States uses 120-volt electricity with Type A and B outlets. If you are traveling from outside North America, you may need a universal adapter or voltage converter for your electronics.

How much extra money should I budget?

Most major expenses are included, but you should budget $500 to $1,000 for personal extras such as alcohol (which is not included), meals not included in the trip price, souvenirs, personal snacks, and optional activities and gratuities for your lead guide.

How is tipping handled on this trip?
Tipping your expert guides is a common practice to show appreciation for their professionalism and expertise. For hiking adventures in the US, we recommend a lead guide gratuity of $50 to $70 per day, per guest, delivered to the trip leader at the end of the journey. Tips for hotel staff, restaurant service, and local activity guides are already included in your trip price.

Health and Safety

Do you recommend travel insurance?

Yes, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance can help cover trip cancellations or interruptions, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, travel delays, and other unexpected situations. We offer travel insurance with Arch RoamRight and will be happy to provide you with a quote. Please see our Travel Resources page for more information.

Do I need to be cleared by a doctor to participate?
There is no standard required clearance from a doctor to participate in this trip. You will have an opportunity to discuss your fitness and preparedness for the trip with MT Sobek. If you have medical concerns or questions about fitness, consult your healthcare provider before traveling.
What medical support is available during the trip?
Your MT Sobek guides are trained in wilderness first aid and carry a group first aid kit and emergency communication device at all times. Please be aware that in the Alaskan wilderness, hospital facilities can be far away and medical evacuations can be prolonged and expensive.
What kind of challenges should I expect on Alaska Prince William Sound to Denali Multi-Adventure?
The primary challenges are the variable weather and the physical demands of the activities. Alaska presents a unique environment with long summer daylight hours that can disrupt sleep, mosquitoes that are part of the summer experience, and cruises and road transfers that can cause motion sickness for those who are susceptible. Coming prepared with an eye mask, head net and insect repellent, and/or motion sickness remedies can help reduce these challenges.
How can I stay healthy during the trip?
Staying healthy on this trip starts with good pre-trip preparation and daily habits. Hydrate consistently throughout the day and consider bringing powdered electrolytes to add to your drinking water to replenish minerals lost through sweat. Foot care is critical on hiking trips; address "hot spots" or blisters early using moleskin or Compeed patches, keep your toenails clipped, and wear liner socks to reduce friction. To prevent bites from Alaska's well-known mosquitoes, use insect repellent such as DEET and wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants throughout your trip. Finally, maintain good hygiene by washing or sanitizing your hands frequently, especially before meals and after using the bathroom.
Will I encounter any bears?
Bears are curious, intelligent, and potentially dangerous animals that inhabit the areas where you will be traveling. While many guests hope for a sighting, bears generally prefer to avoid groups of people. During your journey, your guides will educate you on our specific bear safety protocols designed to keep both travelers and wildlife safe from harm.

If you choose to hike independently during your free time in Denali National Park, we recommend speaking with a park ranger at the visitor center to gain the necessary insight for traveling safely on your own in bear country.

Trail Support and Emergencies

What if I have an emergency and need to be evacuated?
In an emergency, your guides will use their training and communication equipment to coordinate the best course of action. Evacuation methods depend on our location and can involve vehicle transfers or more complex logistics. Because these services can be very costly, we strongly emphasize the importance of travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage.
Are bathrooms available on the trail?
Facilities are available at lodges, visitor centers, and in towns, but are not available during our wilderness hikes or kayaking sessions. Your guides will instruct the group on Leave No Trace practices for "answering nature's call" responsibly in the wild.
What is the guide-to-guest ratio?
This trip is typically led by one expert MT Sobek guide from start to finish. You will also be joined by local activity guides throughout the trip.
