Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and depart at your leisure, taking with you memories of your time on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River—a true bucket-list adventure.
Navigating the logistics of getting to and on the Middle Fork is our wheelhouse and MT Sobek has been the adventure travel leader since 1969.
Strategically designed for world-class fly fishing on an iconic river, this all-inclusive trip delivers all the thrills without the hassle of planning.
Expert oarsmen, our guides read the water and get you to the best spots on the river so you can spend more time fishing.
Itinerary While this itinerary offers a general overview of your rafting trip, each adventure is unique. Water levels and campsite assignments from the U.S. Forest Service can change weekly, which may impact the daily schedule. Think of this itinerary as a helpful snapshot, not a fixed plan.
Accommodations The small-town rural Idaho accommodations on this trip provide great access to the river but are simpler compared to what you'll find on many MT Sobek trips—rooms and amenities are more basic, though Wi-Fi is available. On the river, your dome-style tent—large enough to stand up in—will be set up in a scenic location with everything you need for a good night's sleep, and outstanding meals will be prepared by your guides.

The best people to immerse you in a destination are the ones who live there, which is why we feature local Adventure Guides on our trips. Here are a few that you might meet on this adventure.
Hayden B.
Growing up in Salt Lake City, Hayden was introduced to rivers and outdoor adventure early on, thanks to his mom, a whitewater kayaker and rafter. That early exposure sparked a love for the outdoors and a passion for sharing wild places with others. In 2020, Hayden began guiding in Stanley, Idaho, exploring some of the most remote and beautiful areas, including the Frank Church Wilderness. He holds certifications as a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and in CPR, ensuring that every trip is not only adventurous but also safe. With a strong background in fish biology and river ecology, Hayden enjoys sharing insights about the ecosystems that make these rivers so special. Whether itโs spotting native fish species or discussing the natural history of the area, he loves helping guests create a deeper understanding about the environment around them.
Bridger B.
Bridger grew up in Salmon, Idaho, along the banks of the Salmon River. He guided his first multi-day rafting trip at just 15 and has been on the water ever since. Since that first trip, heโs guided rivers from the Tatshenshini in Alaska and Canada to the Rio Grande through Big Bend National Park on the Texas-Mexico border. Bridger has been certified as a Wilderness First Responder and Swiftwater Rescue Technician for the past six years, and he plans to continue expanding his skills in emergency medicine and technical outdoor training. Today, he still calls Salmon home and he proudly holds the title as the worst player on the local beer league hockey team.

FAQs
Where do I meet the group on the first day?
Meet your guide on the back lawn of the Stagecoach Inn for a 6:00 pm welcome orientation meeting and gear check.
When is the best time of year to fish the Middle Fork Salmon River?
The best time to fly fish the Middle Fork Salmon River is late season—August through September—when flows drop, water clarity improves, insect activity is high, and far fewer groups are on the river.
What species of fish will I catch on this trip?
You can expect to catch primarily native Westslope cutthroat trout, with opportunities for rainbow trout and the possibility of encountering bull trout (all fishing on this trip is catch-and-release, no intentional targeting).
Is this trip more boat-based fishing or walk-and-wade?
This trip is primarily boat-based fly fishing, allowing guests to cover more water efficiently, with selective walk-and-wade opportunities when side channels or structure zones are especially productive.
Do I need to bring my own fly rod and flies?
You are welcome to bring your own fly rod and personal fly box, and we will also provide recommended gear guidelines in advance. Guests who do not have gear can request rods, reels, and flies by contacting their adventure Coordinator.
What weight fly rod is recommended for fly fishing on the Middle Fork?
A 4-weight or 5-weight rod is recommended for late-season Middle Fork fly fishing because these weights match the size of native cutthroat trout and provide ideal presentation with the dry flies we primarily use.
How many hours per day will we be fishing?
You will typically fish most of the day—generally 6+ river hours—actively casting from the boat and targeting pocket water, seams, and holding zones throughout each section of the river.
What is the group size for this trip?
This trip operates with a maximum of 21 guests. We can accommodate up to 12 fishing guests and one guide and one boat for every two fishers.
How remote is this trip?
This trip takes you deep inside the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, one of the most remote river corridors in the lower 48. There are no roads, no cell service, and no easy exit points once you are on the river. It's a fantastic opportunity to unplug, reset, and relax away from it all.
Are alcohol and beverages allowed at camp?
Yes, guests may bring beverages of choice to enjoy in camp each night. We are happy to discuss labeling and packing requirements to ensure they travel properly on backcountry flights.
Is this trip appropriate for beginners?
Yes. Late-season Middle Fork fly fishing is fun for beginners because native cutthroat trout are highly surface-oriented—ideal conditions when you are learning. Experienced anglers will also find it deeply satisfying as a bucket-list fly fishing destination and true wilderness experience.
Can I do this trip with my own group of fly fishers?
Yes! Your group can take over any date that does not already have bookings. We also have charter options available. Contact one of our experts to learn more about these options.
Can this trip accommodate non-anglers in my group?
Yes. This trip works very well for mixed groups. Non-anglers can hike side canyons, soak in hot springs, enjoy wildlife viewing, read on the riverbank, and relax in camp while anglers fish.
What is the weather like on the Middle Fork in August and September?
Generally, you will have warm, pleasant days on the water. Temperatures can vary greatly from Thomas Creek in the canyon, warming as you head downstream to the Flying B Ranch. In the evenings, temperatures drop quickly. You will get the most out of your trip by packing the appropriate layers, and MT Sobek provides a comprehensive packing list to all booked guests.
