FAQs About Guided Hiking in Japan
The Nakasendo (Road Through the Mountains), was a major trade artery connecting Kyoto and Tokyo during Japan’s Edo period. Merchants, samurai, and feudal lords traveled it for centuries. Today, it passes through well-preserved post towns such as Magome and Tsumago, offering a wonderful look into Japan’s history. The terrain on the Nakasendo is varied, with paved or well-maintained dirt trails interspersed with more rugged sections that include walking over raised tree roots and climbing mossy stone steps. Pass through the Kiso Valley on hikes highlighting the most interesting sections of the trail between post towns and rice fields on MT Sobek’s Japan Kyoto to Tokyo Walking Tour.
The Kumano Kodo is a network of pilgrimage paths crisscrossing the Kii Peninsula and one of only two pilgrimage routes on UNESCO’s World Heritage list! While the Nakasendo historically connected two cites for trade, the Kumano Kodo spiritually connects the Kumano Sanzan (three grand shrines). The Nakahechi, or “imperial route,” has been walked by everyone from emperors and commoners for over a century, and is still in use today. This mountain route is more challenging, with most of the trail in its natural state, rolling over exposed tree roots, ascending high passes, and climbing up (and down) steep stone staircases, worn and shifted under the feet of thousands of pilgrims over the years. We highly recommend trekking poles for this hike. Hike amidst cedar forests and climb stone steps to mountain views on MT Sobek’s Japan Kumano Kodo Walking & Hiking Tour.
Spring and fall offer the best hiking temperatures and weather across the central part of the country, with copper and gold autumn colors and the chance of cherry blossoms in spring, if your timing is right. The trails are clear of winter snow, and the summer heat and humidity is not an issue. We intentionally plan most of our trips in spring and fall for the most enjoyable hiking experience.
However, in the far north of Honshu Island, the climate is different: summer and early fall offer ideal hiking conditions with moderate temperatures and the high mountain areas clear of winter snow.
Guides make travel better in so many ways. In Japan, an experienced local guide might take you off the trail to find an Oji (minor shrine) or Jizo (guardian statue) that others would walk right past. Local guides can translate menus (and make recommendations), make introductions, and explain onsen etiquette. They illuminate history with stories of monks, shoguns, and emperors and unravel complex subjects, such as the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism. Naturally, they are experts at navigating the landscape and knowledgeable about the ferns and forest, flowers and fruits that you may encounter on the trail. Experienced local guides are at the heart of every Japan trip we design at MT Sobek.
We keep our groups quite small, generally 4–14 guests. In Japan, space is at a premium, and small groups allow us to do things and go places that other groups can’t. For instance, a ryokan stay is a quintessential Japanese experience, and the most traditional properties have a limited number of rooms.
Yes, beginners can absolutely enjoy MT Sobek’s multi-day hiking trips in Japan, with the right preparation. Our adventures are generally designed with a moderate hiking level, often with consecutive days on the trail, so you’ll need to be comfortable hiking several days in a row prior to the trip. Some trips, such as the Shikoku Pilgrimage, are more physically demanding due to longer distances, steep climbs and descents, and trail conditions, and require a stronger fitness base. With preparation, beginners often find these trips both achievable and deeply rewarding; it’s a wonderful a chance to build confidence while experiencing Japan on foot.
