Travel to the Grand Canyon & Take in Spectacular Views
Day 1
Begin your adventure near Phoenix, AZ, where you'll meet your MT Sobek guides for a brief orientation before driving north through the Sonoran Desert towards Grand Canyon National Park. Entering the park from the east, and stop for lunch at iconic Desert View Watchtower, a 70 foot tall stone tower perched on the canyon's edge. Designed by Mary Colter in 1932, Desert View contains a wealth of murals depicting various Hopi traditions and stories. Continuing to your hotel near the South Rim, check in with time to stretch your legs on a walk along the Rim Trail enjoying panoramic views of this awe inspiring natural wonder. At dinner this evening get excited as your guides describe what to expect during tomorrow's adventure down to Phantom Ranch. Spend tonight at a South Rim hotel.

Descend to Phantom Ranch on Breathtaking South Kaibab Trail
Day 2
Gather for an early breakfast before slinging on daypacks and tightening up laces in preparation for today's big hike. Begin our journey into the inner canyon on the most direct—and one of the most scenic—routes to the Colorado River. The hand built South Kaibab Trail follows open ridgelines that provide jaw dropping 360-degree views throughout the seven-mile descent. Hiking down along a series of switchbacks, you eventually reach the aptly named Ooh Aah Point before continuing on to Cedar Ridge, a flat plateau where you may encounter a mule train en route to the bottom of the canyon. At Skeleton Point, peer down and catch a glimpse of the mighty Colorado, perpetually carving its way through the canyon as it has for millions of years. The last part of the hike leads you along the big river itself, then over a suspension bridge as you approach Phantom Ranch, serenely nestled on the banks of Bright Angel Creek. Tonight, enjoy a hot meal at the Phantom Ranch Canteen before stepping outside to gaze up at an inky canopy speckled with countless twinkling stars. Sleep in mixed gender cabins at Phantom Ranch tonight.

Hike Bright Angel Trail to the Rim & Return to Phoenix
Day 3
Rising before the sun this morning, eat a hearty breakfast in the canteen before beginning the demanding but dazzling 10-mile hike back to the South Rim. Exit the canyon on Bright Angel, a classic Grand Canyon corridor trail. Unlike the South Kaibab Trail which follows a ridgeline, Bright Angel follows a natural fault, making it less exposed but equally awe-inspiring. After bidding an early farewell to Phantom Ranch, cross the Colorado River and follow the trail as it snakes its way up to the shady oasis of Havasupai Gardens, your halfway point. After a short rest, tackle the final steep ascent up Jacob's Ladder through the canyon's Redwall layer. While always a tremendous challenge, your guide is nearby sharing helpful tips and stories to keep you energized along the way. Reaching the South Rim by early afternoon, celebrate your epic accomplishment and gaze into the depths of the canyon one last time, enjoying a newfound appreciation for its hidden treasures that only a small percentage of visitors ever get to see. Loading into the van, begin the drive back to the Phoenix area, planning to arrive late this evening.
Activity: 10 miles of hiking with 4,300' elevation gain
Our expert guides provide travelers with helpful hints, techniques and hiking tips, plus knowledge on local wildlife, geology, and history.
Be one of the few to hike famed trails all the way to the canyon floor and spend two magical nights at the historic and highly coveted Phantom Ranch—the only lodge below the canyon rim.
MT Sobek's legacy of preservation and protection enables us to operate over 30 Global National Park adventures.
Important Note: The Transcanyon Waterline Construction Project in the Grand Canyon is underway through May 14, 2025 which means the April 18, 2025 trip has a modified hike due to the closure of Bright Angel Trail. Instead of the usual route, we will be ascending and descending the South Kaibab Trail (7 miles; 4,780' elevation gain/loss).
Phantom Ranch Accommodations During your stay at Phantom Ranch, you will occupy shared, mixed-gender cabins reserved exclusively for MTS guests and guides. Single rooms are unavailable for the nights in the canyon. Each cabin varies in size, accommodating anywhere from two to ten occupants, and is equipped with bedding, a cold-water sink, a toilet, liquid soap, and hand towels. Showers, hot-water sinks, bath towels, and a combined liquid soap and shampoo are provided at a central facility available to all ranch guests.

FAQs
Who will meet me on arrival?
You can choose to meet your guides and fellow guests on Day 1 of the trip at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Tempe and TownePlace Suites Tempe at 8:00 a.m. or, if you prefer to fly into Flagstaff, AZ, meet at the Flagstaff Pulliam Airport at 10:30 a.m. on Day 1 instead.
What is the best time of year to hike to Phantom Ranch?
This trip is offered in April, November, and December, when winter can bring snow to the rim, creating a uniquely beautiful scene to start your hike from the South Rim. Fewer visitors and increasingly pleasant hiking weather accompany you down to Phantom Ranch, where average daily high temperatures in the inner canyon range comfortably in the 50s-60s, great for active outdoor adventure.
Can I skip some activities on this trip if I want more downtime?
This itinerary, while short, is intense and requires hikers to keep pace with the group on back-to-back days of challenging hiking. For a shorter Grand Canyon trip that offers more opportunity to relax at Phantom Ranch between big hiking days, check out our Arizona Grand Canyon Phantom Ranch Weekend 4 Day Tour, offering a two-night stay at Phantom Ranch, with the chance to explore the spectacular Clear Creek Trail, or take a day off to relax before hiking back up to the South Rim and returning to Flagstaff then on to Phoenix.
How should I train for this Grand Canyon Phantom Ranch hike?
This trip requires that all visitors descend from the canyon rim to the Colorado River and then, importantly, complete the full hike back out. You should do significant training and feel confident in your ability to hike uphill for as long as 8 hours. There is a steep elevation loss of 4,800 feet over 7 miles. The hike out ascends 4,300 feet of elevation over 10 miles. The trails in the Grand Canyon are well-used and maintained, but are uneven with significant daily elevation change, so it is important that hikers are fit and confident. Remember, the South Rim is also at an elevation of 8,000' so hiking will feel more strenuous near the top. If you don't have access to hikes with large elevation change, stair climbing and carrying your daypack with some water in it can help you get ready. Always train with the boots and socks that you'll be wearing on the trip for the best results.
How is this trip different from the other MT Sobek Phantom Ranch Trips?
This is our shortest Phantom Ranch trip for 2025, and you'll spend one night at the South Rim before hiking down to spend one night at Phantom Ranch, then hike back up to the South Rim and heading to Flagstaff and on to Phoenix. If you want a shorter trip, but would like more time at Phantom Ranch, check out our Arizona Grand Canyon Phantom Ranch Weekend 4 Day Tour, offering a more immersive two-night stay at Phantom Ranch. Or, for a greater variety of scenery and a longer adventure, consider our rim-to-rim hiking adventures in summer or fall:
Where can I find more information about Phantom Ranch?
Check out our Phantom Ranch information page for more info on reservations, length of stay, amenities, bathrooms, weather, history, gear considerations, wildlife and to learn more about all the ways to visit Phantom Ranch with MT Sobek.
What is the minimum age for MT Sobek Phantom Ranch hiking trips?
The standard minimum age for these trips is 18, and hikers must be fit to complete the challenging hikes into and back out of the Grand Canyon. Families with fit younger teens may consider private and custom trip options.
Thank you for a wonderful trip! The guides, the meals and the prep materials were great.
