Marvel at the diverse wildlife, from desert tortoises to Gila monsters, and take in the vibrant colors of the park's plant life. The park's unique geological features make it a must-visit destination for any nature lover. After traversing Red Canyon, arrive at Bryce Canyon National Park in the late afternoon. In the afternoon, see more of this incredible park on a second hike. Angel's Palace Loop winds atop a sandstone bench, offering 360-degree views of the basin, and Grand Parade Trail, which loops along some of the park's most photogenic spires. Your guide will choose the trail based on conditions and group interest.

    Day 5

Today’s adventure takes you into the Virgin River Narrows, one of the most distinctive hikes in the National Park System. Wade upstream through the Virgin River as it winds between Zion Canyon’s soaring sandstone walls, which rise up to 1,000 feet overhead. Water levels vary from ankle- to waist-deep, adding excitement and challenge to this remarkable route. As you move deeper into the canyon, discover sculpted rock passages, hanging gardens, sandy beaches, and towering cliffs illuminated by shifting light. The river’s uneven footing and current require stamina, balance, and a spirit of adventure, but the dramatic scenery makes every step worthwhile. Celebrate your journey with a farewell dinner in Springdale.

    Accommodation: Zion Lodge

Activity: 5-7 hours/5-6 miles hiking - in/out of water all day

Transportation: 10 to 15-minute Zion Shuttle Bus

  • Hike Watchman Trail & Depart to Las Vegas

    Day 6

Rise and shine for a perfect farewell to Canyon Country. Starting the ascent of the Watchman Trail near sunrise is a perfect way to avoid the crowds and enjoy the serene beauty of the park in the early morning light. As you hike up the trail, you'll encounter a variety of natural features, including beehive formations, lush vegetation, and views straight up the main fork of Zion Canyon. The trail is relatively moderate in difficulty, making it a perfect way to greet the day. The trail culminates at the Watchman Overlook, which offers panoramic views of the canyon and the Virgin River. The viewpoint is especially stunning, as the first light of day illuminates the canyon walls and casts a warm glow over the landscape. Return to the hotel to pack and enjoy a hot breakfast before departing for Las Vegas, arriving at noon to catch homebound flights.

Your Guides

The best people to immerse you in a destination are the ones who live there, which is why we feature local Adventure Guides on our trips. Here are a few that you might meet on this adventure.

Alisa L.

Alisa L.

Growing up in Montana and New Mexico instilled an early love of the outdoors in Alisa. Following her childhood dreams, she spent nine adventurous summers working in and exploring magnificent Glacier National Park. While rafting the Grand Canyon in 2016, she realized she wanted to become a guide and has since led river and hiking trips in 14 national parks. She lives the life she loves and loves the life she lives, as the saying goes!

Shawn R.

Shawn R.

A southern California native, Shawn grew up with the forest at his back door. After some outdoor exploration around the country, he found his home in northern Idaho, where he could hike, bike, and raft to his heart's content. Since 2021 he has been guiding hiking trips in the national parks of the Southwest and canoe trips on the Upper Missouri River in Montana. He feels lucky to share his favorite places and discover new ones together with you.

Jerry W.

Jerry W.

Jerry started guiding in 2007 after moving to Colorado where he discovered mountain biking in the fresh alpine air. After years of guiding multi-day hiking and cycling trips, he has built up a depth of hands-on experience and wilderness wisdom that he brings to each adventure. He was raised in Florida, followed by four years in the military, then moving to Colorado, where the magnificent wilderness inspired him to guide.

FAQs

Trip Overview

What makes MT Sobek's Utah Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks Hiking trip unique?

This journey brings together two of the American Southwest's most iconic national parks in one thoughtfully paced adventure. This tour combines classic hikes—like hiking among Bryce Canyon's towering hoodoos and wading through Zion's famed Virgin River Narrows —with active exploration of nearby hidden wonders too often mistakenly overlooked by other visitors to Southern Utah, like Snow Canyon and Kodachrome Basin.

National Parks Legacy: With decades of experience as National Park Service authorized guides, MT Sobek has the access and expertise to lead you into the heart of Zion and Bryce Canyon.

Prime Access: Stay in hand-selected locations inside the national parks, like the Zion National Park Lodge in the picturesque heart of Zion's Main Canyon, and Bryce Canyon Lodge, perched right on the canyon rim. These very special stays allow you the best opportunity to soak in spectacular views while minimizing time spent at crowded park entry points and maximizing your time on the trail and in the parks.

Hidden Gems: Beyond the famed trails and views of Zion and Bryce Canyon, we explore the unique lava flows and red rock spires of Snow Canyon and Kodachrome Basin, providing a deeper look at Utah's extraordinary and beautiful geological diversity on paths less traveled, with the insider help of expert local guides.

When is the best time to experience Utah Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks?

May, June, September, and October are the months when temperatures are generally best for hiking. MT Sobek times this itinerary for these shoulder-season windows to balance long daylight hours in the spring and early summer with the cooler mornings of fall, avoiding peak summer heat.

Spring & Early Summer (May-June): Enjoy mild conditions and longer daylight. This is the peak season for desert wildflowers in Zion, with average highs typically ranging from 75° to 85°F, while Bryce Canyon remains cooler, typically ranging from 65° to 75°F.

Fall (September-October): Experience crisp air and vibrant fall colors peak in late September at Bryce’s higher elevations, while temperatures in Zion Canyon by late October typically settle comfortably in the 70s °F.

Elevation & Temperature: Bryce Canyon sits at 8,000 to 9,000 feet—significantly higher than Zion. Expect Bryce to be consistently 10° to15°F cooler, with broad changes in temperature between locations and throughout each day.

What is the group size for this trip?
The typical group size for this trip is between 4 and 12 guests, creating an experience that feels personal, relaxed, and thoughtfully paced. Small group travel allows us to share moments that make a journey truly memorable.
What is the minimum age for this trip?

The standard minimum age for this trip is 18. This itinerary is designed with adult travelers in mind, based on daily activity levels, accommodations, and overall group experience. Families or groups with children as young as 12 please check out our private departures .

What makes this a Level 2 trip?

This is a Level 2 trip due to the combination of consecutive hiking days, moderate mileage, and varied desert terrain. Most days involve 2 to 5 hours of hiking—typically between 2 to 7 miles—with frequent breaks and a focus on steady, manageable pacing rather than high-intensity hiking.

Moderate Physical Demand: While you will be active for multiple days, the elevation gains are typically gentle to moderate, making this itinerary accessible for most reasonably fit travelers seeking active exploration on the more relaxed side.

Varied Terrain Adaptation: You will navigate a range of surfaces—from paved park paths and sandy trails to the rocky riverbed of the Zion Narrows—with expert guides providing the guidance and support needed for each environment.

Altitude Considerations: The itinerary includes time in Bryce Canyon at elevations up to 9,000 feet. Our Level 2 pacing allows for proper acclimatization, so you can enjoy the meandering trails and panoramic views at Bryce Canyon comfortably.

Will the itinerary change?
We plan the itinerary carefully, but adjustments may be needed due to weather, trail conditions, or other factors. MT Sobek and our guides make thoughtful decisions when needed in real time to keep the experience safe and enjoyable, and any significant changes will be communicated as early and as clearly as possible.

Private transfers are not arranged by MT Sobek for this trip. If you are arriving or departing outside the group transfer windows, you should plan your own transportation.

How much time will we spend in vehicles during the trip?
Most days focus on hiking, with short to moderate drives between parks and trailheads. Transfers generally range from about 1 to 3.5 hours, frequently broken up with stops for activity or meals, depending on the day's route. Details are included in the daily itinerary. You will travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned 15-passenger van with reclining seats, large viewing windows, and USB charging ports.
Are there any especially long travel days?
There are a few longer drives, such as the transfer from Las Vegas to Bryce Canyon (3.5 hours), from Bryce Canyon to Zion (2 hours), and Zion to Las Vegas (3 hours) but these are planned to support the overall flow of the itinerary and are balanced with hiking time.

Fitness, Terrain and Trail Expectations

How difficult is the activity on Utah Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks Hiking?

This is a Level 2 tour involving consecutive days of hiking for 3 to 5 hours per day. The itinerary features a mix of maintained park paths, steady switchbacks, and uneven desert terrain. While most daily elevation gains are moderate—ranging from 375 to 1,100 feet—the high-altitude setting of Bryce Canyon and the unique demands of river hiking in Zion’s Narrows require a reasonable base level of fitness.

Varied Desert Terrain: Experience a diverse range of trail surfaces, including well-maintained national park trails, sandstone slickrock, and the rocky, submerged riverbed of the Zion Narrows.

The Narrows Challenge: Wading through the Virgin River involves walking in moving water over uneven polished river rocks, requiring good balance and the use of trekking poles for balance.

High-Altitude Hiking: In Bryce Canyon, you will be active at elevations between 7,000 and 9,000 feet, where the thinner air can make moderate climbs feel more strenuous.

Flexible Daily Mileage: Most days consist of multiple hikes totaling up to 8 miles, with breaks between the hikes.

Do I need prior experience?
Yes, you should have some hiking experience and be comfortable hiking for several hours on uneven terrain. Being prepared for full, back-to-back active days will give you the best experience on this adventure.
How should I train or prepare for Utah Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks Hiking?
Give yourself adequate time to build a sufficient cardio base with activities like hiking, brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or stair climbing. Aim for regular, consistent workouts each week rather than short bursts of intense training.

If possible, practice hiking on hills and uneven terrain, and include both uphill and downhill training, as descents can be just as demanding on the legs. Train with the daypack that you'll carry on the tour and be sure it has a hip belt and sternum strap. Start with your typical trail gear and gradually work up to carrying about 10 pounds. Try to maintain a pace of around two miles per hour, which is typical of the group's pace on the trip, depending on the terrain. This helps build strength and simulates real trail conditions. Consistency, gradual progression, and comfort moving for several hours at a time will set you up for the most enjoyable experience.
Is there any exposure or technical terrain on this trip?
While dramatic canyon scenery and elevated viewpoints are a highlight to many on this trip, we understand they are not for everyone. Most of the trails are wide enough to get some distance between you and any drop-offs and scenic overlooks are generally optional. There are no required sections with significant or sustained exposure, but if you have a severe sensitivity to heights, you may find a few moments challenging. This is not a technical trip, but some trails include uneven footing, slickrock, narrow paths, and hiking in water in Zion's Narrows.
Can I hike at my own pace?
We hike as a group with regular breaks. Guides help manage pacing so everyone can hike comfortably while maintaining safety and group cohesion.
What if I want to skip a day?
Talk with your guide as early as possible. What is feasible depends on the day's location, access to roads, and overall logistics. In some cases, it may be possible to relax at the hotel or enjoy a shorter activity. Your guide will help assess the options and determine the safest and most practical plan based on the itinerary and conditions. On this tour, there are options to skip the activity on Days 2, 3, or 5 if you prefer to relax at the hotel instead.
How much free time will I have?
Days are active and filled with hiking, scenic drives, and amazing viewpoints. You will arrive at your hotel with time to freshen up before enjoying dinner and free time to do a little stargazing before bed.

Accommodations and Meals

What should I expect from accommodations on this trip?
Accommodations are comfortable hotels chosen for their location and convenience in or near the parks. Historic national park properties like the Bryce Canyon Lodge are unmatched in the location, scenery and access they provide, and may have rooms and beds that are smaller than is typical of some modern hotels. At Bryce Canyon Lodge, temperatures are typically cooler due to the altitude, so there is no air conditioning.
Will I have access to Wi-Fi and electricity?
Wi-Fi and electricity are available at some hotels, but access can be limited, especially within national parks. Bryce Canyon Lodge has no in-room Wi-Fi, but it is available in the lobby. Wi-Fi is available in guest rooms and in public spaces at Zion National Park Lodge in Zion. There will be no service while on the trails. Guides carry GPS emergency communication devices in remote areas.
What meals are included?
All meals are included as noted in your detailed itinerary. Snacks and water are provided between meals.
What is the food like on Utah Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks Hiking?
Expect hearty, classic American fare on this trip, such as burgers and steak, with fish and veggie options too. You'll have the chance to check out some local spots, enjoy some picnics in red rock scenery, and dine at historic park lodges.

Breakfast is usually at the hotel or at a nearby restaurant. There may be the option to order off the menu or sometimes it is buffet style and will include several hot options, cereal, fruit, pastries, yogurt, juices, coffee, and tea.

Lunches will be eaten at a good spot on the trail or at a local restaurant. Bagged lunches can include items such as sandwiches, fruit, cookies, chips, veggies, nuts, and granola bars, or you may be treated to a food themed lunch, like Mediterranean Day or Southwestern Day, prepared by your guides, picnic style.

Soft drinks, water, coffee, and tea are included at group meals. Alcohol is available for purchase.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Yes, we can accommodate many common dietary restrictions, like vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free, on this trip with advance notice.Let us know about your dietary restrictions and food allergies as soon as possible, so we can coordinate with guides, hotels, and restaurants. Please also list these on your Participant Information Form.

Are single rooms available?

Yes, a limited number of single rooms are available on this trip. About a third of our travelers go solo, and single room inventory often books up quickly! You can find more information on solo traveler options here .

Are triple rooms available?

Triple rooms may be possible at some properties, but availability depends on hotel layouts, typically 2 beds per room, and cannot be guaranteed.

Packing and Gear

What should I pack for Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks hiking?
Key items include sturdy hiking footwear, a waterproof rain jacket, layered clothing for variable temperatures, reusable water bottles or hydration system, sun protection, and a comfortable daypack.

Dressing in layers is essential. Your inner layers should be breathable and moisture-wicking, while your outer layer should be waterproof and wind-resistant to protect against sudden rain showers and changing conditions. While snow is not common, it is possible at higher elevations later in the season, so full rain protection and warm layers are important on every departure.

A detailed packing list will be provided.
Do I need trekking poles or specialty gear?
REI Co-op Traverse trekking poles or similar are provided on this adventure and are beneficial for stability on uneven terrain and descents. for stability on uneven terrain and descents. for stability on uneven terrain and descents.

When hiking the Zion Narrows, our route focuses on the lower section of the canyon, where you’ll hike along the riverbanks, periodically crossing the Virgin River, with water levels typically only reaching between the knee and thigh. Hiking in shorts and comfortable water shoes or water sport sandals with a heel strap, and using trekking poles for balance, is the best way to experience the Zion Narrows hike.

While dry suits are more commonly used when hiking in the deep upper reaches of the canyon where swimming is required, a full neck-to-ankle suit tends to be uncomfortable and is unnecessary on your MT Sobek tour.

What size daypack should I bring?
A 25- to 35-liter daypack with a hip belt is ideal for carrying water, lunch, extra layers, rain gear, and personal items.
Can I bring more than one bag?
Guests should plan to bring one main piece of luggage and a daypack. Because vehicle space is limited, packing efficiently is important. A soft-sided wheeled duffel bag or suitcase is preferred but not required.

On this itinerary, luggage transfer is included, meaning your bags are moved from hotel to hotel while you hike—so you can focus on the trail, not your gear.
Are there any seasonally required items?
Be prepared for a wide range of conditions throughout the season. Spring, late summer, and fall hiking can bring significant temperature swings, with cool mornings and evenings and much warmer conditions mid-day. Early and late season departures—especially in September and October—often require extra warm layers, including a warm wool or synthetic jacket, thermal base layers, gloves, and a hat.
What kind of footwear should I bring for this trip?
Sturdy, properly fitting hiking footwear is essential for this trip. We recommend hiking boots or supportive hiking shoes with solid soles, good traction, and ankle support to handle uneven trails, slickrock, and variable terrain. Waterproof footwear is strongly encouraged, as trails can be wet or muddy after rain. During the hike in Zion's Narrows, you'll want water shoes or water sport sandals with a heel strap for the best experience.

Some hikers are comfortable using low-ankle trail shoes in certain conditions, but you should also bring high-ankle hiking boots in case trail conditions or weather require extra stability.

Whatever footwear you choose, it is critical that it fits well and is fully broken in before the trip. Hiking in unfamiliar terrain for multiple days in a row puts added stress on feet and ankles, and reliable, well-tested footwear makes a meaningful difference in comfort and safety.
Will I have access to laundry during the trip?
All hotels on this itinerary offer laundry service for an additional charge.
Should I bring a personal medical kit?
Yes. A group medical kit is provided, and you should also bring your personal medications and a personal supply of first aid basics such as blister care, bandages, sunscreen, lip protection, and electrolytes.

On-the-Ground Travel Tips

What is the weather like for hiking in Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks by month?

Weather on this tour varies significantly by park and elevation. Bryce Canyon sits near 8,000 feet and remains 10° to 20°F cooler than Zion throughout the season. Because there is often a 30-degree swing between morning and afternoon temperatures, MT Sobek departures are timed for the shoulder months to ensure the most comfortable hiking conditions.

May & June (Spring/Early Summer): Zion’s daytime highs typically average from 80° to 95°F while Bryce remains a comfortable 60° to 75°F. Early starts are utilized in June to enjoy the desert before the afternoon heat peaks in the lower canyons.

September & October (Fall): These months offer generally cooler conditions. Daytime highs in Zion typically average from 75° to 90°F, while Bryce Canyon (55° to 75°F) may see frost or even the slight possibility of light snow at higher elevations late in the season.

The Elevation Factor: Temperatures drop significantly as you access high elevation at Bryce Canyon (7,000-9,000') as compared with lower altitude desert weather typical of Zion (4,300-5,400').

Dynamic Desert Weather: Conditions can change quickly from sun to wind or rain and from morning to midday and into the evening. Carrying a waterproof outer shell and warm insulating layers is essential for adapting to the rapid shifts common in the high desert.

What currency should I bring?
US dollars are used throughout the trip. Credit cards are widely accepted, but small amounts of cash are helpful for personal purchases.
Will I have cell service?
Cell service is limited in many areas, especially on the trails and within national parks. Download important information for offline access.
Will I need electrical adapters or a voltage converter?
Standard US electrical outlets are available at the hotels. You will be able to charge phones, cameras, and other personal electronics there.

For international guests, US electricity operates at 120 volts and has Type A two-pin or Type B three-prong outlets. Check to see if your electronics are dual voltage, or if you need a converter.
How much extra money should I budget?
Plan for personal expenses such as alcoholic beverages, souvenirs, optional activities, laundry, and guide gratuities. There is also one dinner on your own on this tour.
How is tipping handled on this trip?
Tipping is always optional and based on your experience, but it is a common way to show appreciation for your guide team's leadership, care, and local expertise. For US hiking trips, we recommend budgeting $50 to $70 per guest, per day, shared among the guide team. Lunches on this tour are guide-prepared, and many travelers choose to tip toward the higher end of the range if they feel service was excellent.

Gratuities can be given in cash or through payment apps such as Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal. To ensure tips are distributed fairly across the entire guide team, we ask that all gratuities be given to the trip leader. Tips for included meals, hotel staff, and activity providers are already covered in your tour price.

Health and Safety

Do you recommend travel insurance?

Yes, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance can help cover trip cancellations or interruptions, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, travel delays, and other unexpected situations.

We offer travel insurance with Arch RoamRight and will be happy to provide you with a quote. Please see our Travel Resources page for more information.

Do I need to be cleared by a doctor to participate?

There is no standard required clearance from a doctor to participate in this trip. You will have an opportunity to discuss your fitness and preparedness for the trip with MT Sobek. If you have medical concerns or questions about fitness, consult your healthcare provider before traveling.

What medical support is available during the trip?
Guides are trained in wilderness first aid and CPR and carry emergency supplies. Medical facilities may be far from some hiking areas, and evacuation from remote areas can take time.
What kind of challenges should I expect?
To get the most out of your Utah adventure, it is helpful to be prepared for the unique desert terrain and environmental conditions of the Southwest. You will experience varied trail surfaces, from hiking through the Virgin River in the Zion Narrows to rocky paths at higher elevations (7,000–9,000') where activity can feel more challenging due to altitude. Since you'll typically enjoy several days in the sun, staying hydrated, using sun protection, and wearing comfortable, broken-in hiking boots are the best ways to keep your momentum going. Your guides are there to support you throughout the journey, managing a steady pace and providing helpful info to help you stay comfortable and focused on enjoying the incredible scenery.
How can I stay healthy during the trip?
Staying healthy starts with consistent self-care throughout the week. Hydrate regularly—especially on warm hiking days—and eat frequently to keep your energy steady. Many guests find it helpful to bring powdered electrolytes to add to their water.

Foot care is especially important on a multi-day hiking tour. Hot spots and blisters are common if not addressed early, so check your feet daily and treat any irritation right away using blister care or bandages. Wearing well-broken-in footwear and keeping your feet clean and dry whenever possible also makes a big difference.

Good hygiene, including regular hand washing or using hand sanitizer, helps prevent illness, and simple habits like trimming toenails before the trip can improve comfort on the trail. Your guides are always available to help with pacing, layering, hydration reminders, and small adjustments that can go a long way toward keeping you feeling strong and comfortable day to day.

Trail Support and Emergencies

What if I have an emergency and need to be evacuated?

If an emergency arises, your guide will assess the situation and take appropriate action based on location, conditions, and access. Evacuation options vary by day and park, and the National Park Service will determine what evacuation methods will be available based on the specific emergency and location within the parks. Helicopter evacuations are not always available, and guests should be prepared to hike out to the nearest evacuation point whenever possible, rather than expecting to rely on helicopter support unless it is necessary. Some areas are closer to roads and medical facilities, while others are more remote and may require a longer response.

Your guides are trained to manage emergencies and carry communication equipment, but it’s important to understand that medical care and evacuation can be time-consuming and, in some cases, expensive. For this reason, we strongly recommend purchasing travel protection to help cover unexpected medical or evacuation-related costs.

If you’re unable to complete a hike or activity, let your guide know as soon as possible. Safety is always the priority, and guides will work to support you while keeping the overall group experience running smoothly.

Are bathrooms available on the trail?
Some trailheads and visitor centers have bathroom facilities, but many hikes do not. Guides will review Leave No Trace practices for answering nature's call off the trail. If you have need of the facili-trees, your guide will direct you.
What is the guide-to-guest ratio?
This trip is typically staffed with one guide for up to five guests, and a second guide will be added for larger groups.

Extensions and Local Exploration

Are trip extensions available before or after Utah Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks Hiking?
Trip extensions are not offered as part of this itinerary. However, guests are welcome to make independent arrangements before or after the tour.
What are the best things to do if I arrive early or stay late?
Many guests enjoy relaxing in Las Vegas exploring the Las Vegas strip, featuring a wide range of shows and entertainment as well as world-class restaurants. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and nearby state parks like Ice Age Fossils and Spring Mountain Ranch are popular choices, for added outdoor exploration before or after the tour.
