The MT Sobek Experience
We founded the concept of small group hiking tours and trekking trips in the Himalayas in 1969 and, today, we offer over 100 adventures that stay true to our legacy. From the Camino de Santiago and Tour du Mont Blanc to Everest Base Camp and hiking tours in Patagonia and Machu Picchu, or on the John Muir Trail, MT Sobek presents you with a hiker’s masterclass, led by the world’s best guides. Along the way, you’ll enjoy an immersive experience as you explore hidden places and meet local people. We also make sure that you eat great food and sleep well in comfortable accommodations, while we take care of the logistics every step of the way.
Our hiking and trekking adventures are guided by local professional guides, who are highly trained in safety procedures and follow Leave No Trace principles. As well as being fun and friendly, they’ll give you an immersive, insider experience—both on and off the beaten path. Many are so popular that people return to hike with them year after year!
On the Trail
There is nothing better than being out on the trail, feeling the breeze on your face and the rush of a spectacular view. Hiking days generally start early, after breakfast, and cover around 5 to 10 miles per day. Some days may have rolling hills or steep inclines, but there are plenty of rest stops on the way—plus a hearty lunch and dinner (per your itinerary).
After an inspiring day of hiking and trekking, recount your tales from the trail and recharge with a delicious dinner. Then, slumber in a range of accommodations that match your chosen adventure—from luxury lodges and boutique hotels to deluxe wilderness camping. We always aim to pick unique and characterful accommodations that make your trip special.
Adventures for Your Skill Level
From easy trails for novice hikers to high-altitude summit bids for experienced trekkers, we have adventures for all skill levels. Level 1 and 2 are the gentlest hikes; Level 4 and 5 are more strenuous—though we recommend training to get the most out of any hiking and trekking adventure. We want you to reach the end with a glowing sense of accomplishment!
What Our Guests Say
It’s true that our guests say it best! Read what adventurers like you are saying about MT Sobek’s hiking and trekking adventures, from the expert guides and epic scenery to the insider experiences, and more. “I have used MT Sobek for several serious hiking tours. It’s always a great experience with talented guides, fabulous scenery, and delicious food. MT Sobek is one of the few companies that still has trips for intrepid travelers looking to explore unexplored corners of the world!” Julie B.
Over the years, we’re proud that our itineraries have been honored as “Tour of a Lifetime” and “World’s Best.” Our John Muir Trail Trek was selected as a “Trip of the Year” Finalist by Outside and, most recently, MT Sobek was voted Best Adventure Company by the readers of USA Today.
World’s Best Treks
Explore the Alps, the hiker’s playground of Europe, and consider the classic circuit of Mont Blanc. Take on one of the world’s ten best treks deep within the granite spires of Chile and Argentina’s Patagonia region. Walk the idyllic literary countryside of England with a long-treasured walk from one coast to another—a full 190 miles (and another of the world’s top ten hikes). Or summit a really big mountain like Kilimanjaro for the feat of a lifetime.
We’ll Challenge & Support You
We understand the transformative power of a long journey on foot, and we’ll do everything we can to make your adventure exciting and safe. Before your trip, we conduct a medical interview with you to make sure you are in proper health for you chosen trip. We’ll advise how you should train and specify a detailed packing list with all the gear you’ll need. Our guides, most of whom have been working us for over a decade, know how to pace groups so no one falls behind.
High-Altitude Trekking Experts
When it comes to big peaks like Kili, we have the highest success rate of any company. Our guides have led MT Sobek groups in these mountain regions for decades, so you’re sure to reach those 18,000-foot Himalayan peaks and successfully summit Kilimanjaro.
Plan Your Trip
Rafting adventures are among the most exciting on the planet and our goal is to make it easy to find the perfect itinerary for your skill level. Here’s a handy guide from our trusted team of adventure experts.
Pick a classic 4-, 5- or 7-day river adventure with daily rafting and kayaking on easy-moderate rivers with Class II to Class IV rapids. Alternatively, enjoy a day or more of rafting and kayaking as part of a multi-adventure.
As well as scheduled group departures, we can also accommodate private groups for a personalized adventure. Call us on 800-974-0300 to find out more about our private adventures.
Seasonal water-level changes can make the same river a different beast, so it’s worth talking with MT Sobek experts to make sure that you are picking a date that suits your ability. We have river departures in North America from April to September.
